For me it would have to be

1. Tolkien
2. King
3. Crichton

And after that it's not so defined and it becomes more about what I'm in the mood for. Neil Gaiman, Terry Brooks and Frank Herbert are all authors I have enjoyed quite a bit too

Brandon Sanderson comes to mind as I've read a lot of his stuff and enjoyed all of it. Beyond that I can think of several names, but all because I loved a specific book or series they wrote rather than an appreciation for their writing in general.

Kinda split. There's nobody I gravitate super heavily towards right now, although my go-to answers usually included Bradbury, Lovecraft, and others who are mostly known for short fiction. Beyond that, you start to get into a lot of people where I only liked one or a few works, at which point I'm really just listing favorite novels or stories. And in some cases, I kinda like the adaptations of the guy's work more so than the author's actual work (ie, Stephen King, although he had some great short stories).

I know I'm not remembering other favorites at the moment either, and this doesn't include authors who I've only read one book/series by, which excluded a lot of authors who I suspect could make this list once I explore more of their work.

I don't read books so I'll choose manga authors. Like the other guy said Togashi for HxH and Yasuhisa Hara (Kingdom) are the best I've read in the format. Hirohiko Araki gets a mention for JoJo's though I don't think he's anywhere near the other two. Just for sheer entertainment value he gets my vote. I've heard great things about Naoki Urasawa (Monster, 20th Century Boys) but haven't gotten around to reading his stuff yet.

I always have a hard time defining "favorite" for anything, because I generally don't hierarch things I like - if I love two things, I don't really try to quantify which one I love "more" (especially since my answer can easily change depending on my mood on any given day).

I will say Roger Zelazny and Stephen Donaldson are near the top of the pile for me, though. Terry Pratchett's up there as well, as is Isaac Asimov. I might toss Fred Saberhagen into that as well.

I read a lot of non-fiction (way more than fiction, these days), but I rarely pay much attention to the writers for that as much as I do the subject matter.
