I've never had my nails go out past my fingertips before in my 24 years of life, decided to grow them out 2 months ago and I keep flipping whenever my nail hits something before my fingertip, just a minute ago I accidentally scratched myself taking my shorts off, a few minutes later "Hmm, why does my leg burn?" turns out I cut myself deep enough to draw blood.

why would you decide to grow them out? Nails are coarse, rough and they get everywhere

To an extent yeah we deal with that, when you get your nails professionally done, they can shape them so they aren't sharp though....or shape them super sharp if that's what you want.
