I took a long break between starting X4 and finishing it, so I can't give you a ranking. 2 and 3 are a blur, and I didn't like 4 so much. My gut is telling me 1>2>4>3, only because 3's final boss had the most bullshit hitbox and it felt hokier and cheaper than 2, which in turn felt hokier and cheaper than 1.

I know 4 is a fan favorite, but I can't get past the trappings of the PS1 format. The loading screens and the annoying voice for X are just annoying, and I didn't really like the last boss. I liked the Double twist, legitimately didn't see that one coming, but it feels kinda herky-jerky and crusty due to its format whereas the SNES games - especially X1 - have aged remarkably well.

I will say that I didn't bother with the Zero campaign though, I tried a little bit and I just wasn't into it. I'm here to play Jump n' Shoot Man, Zero's cool but like c'mon. I'll consider going back and trying it, but otherwise I could just watch a playthrough or the cutscenes and get the same result. I already know that Iris replaces Double and her boss fight leads to that classic meme cutscene.

But yeah, Legacy Collection 2 was on sale so I got it. I'm looking forward to playing it, for better and for worse (hello X7).

A few details about the game without going too spoilery. I'll still add the spoiler tags.

1. Alia is going to drive you crazy.
2. Unlike X4 where you can select either the X game or Zero game here you can select who to play as for each stage and whether X has armor or not.
3. The intro stage is the first key thing. If you select X then he'll have his X4 Force Armor, but Zero will lose his arm cannon. If you choose Zero he'll keep it, but X won't have the armor for the whole game.
4. There are two armors to collect now, but you can't use them until you have all the parts.
5. Rescuing Reploids is introduced here. It's pointless and all they do is award you health and 1-ups.
6. Dying has no meaning in this game as when you return to a stage after a game over you're put right back in whichever area you died in. This includes the boss hallways.
7. The stage designs are pretty bad (but it's far worse in the later games)

So what's the deal with the Fourth Armor? Is it like a save bonus for if you've finished X4 with all the upgrades? Why would I pick the base X if the Fourth Armor has better functionality?

I didn't refresh the thread before I posted this, thanks for the info. The fourth armor seems like a bit of a gamebreaker imo.

I'm playing the giant fish autoscroller area. I hope this isn't an omen of things to come, because what's even the point of shooting the fish if it's just gonna whip out that laser and shred me within like a second?

Ah Tidal Whale's stage...

Shooting the vulnerable parts just helps slow down the attacks, but you have to fight each part later as a miniboss anyway and they regenerate regardless. At least it's weak, especially if you use the armor's charge shot.

I'm gonna get the hang of this, but so far I can see why people see this as a downgrade. I do appreciate that X doesn't have that godawful scream he had in 4 when he dies.

Good news, guys: I just got the part for legs. And Dr. Light's hologram is sentient apparently, because he knows about the Sigma virus and Alia.

So on one hand, the boss fights have been pretty easy so far. I beat Volt Kraken and Crescent Bear pretty easily.

On the other hand, I'm using the Fourth Armor. And I'm concerned that it makes the game a cakewalk, but there's no incentive for me not to use it.

I think of him as a hard light hologram that gets around, continues to observe and learn, and builds the armor pieces accordingly, distributes the capsules, etc. You'll understand more at game's end.

They're also very easy with their weaknesses. I guess the challenge is to go buster only or use Zero.

any unarmored character in x5 takes an obscene amount of damage from everything comparative to the other games in the series so i wouldnt say you're doing anything wrong. as far as i can tell unarmored is just for challenge runs or playing as zero

Ah, okay. It sounds like while X4 had an easier campaign with X with Zero's campaign being harder because of his melee-based combat, in this game it's more like picking X is babby mode and Zero is balanced for more classic MMX fans.

I'm guessing picking Zero at the start is the more balanced option. That way you get his arm cannon and sword, and you don't get the Fourth Armor.

Also, just went back to Tidal Whale's stage and hit the advancing whale robot with the chargeshot. This thing is godlike, I burnt out both halves of the boss before the halfway point.

I feel rude and petty going "armor this, armor that" because I can just take the armor off if I so choose. I actually like playing with the armor because the game is a cakewalk, whereas I was kinda struggling with base X, and that's on me - but I still feel like there's a balancing issue here. I'm being dumb I guess.

The fuckin Volt Kraken bike section is inexcusable though.

The firefly guy's stage feels like a Castlevania pastiche with the Sigma heads. Like it's just that it's a castle, sure, but I just get a Castlevania vibe in particular.

As the story goes the wife of one of the programmers changed the names one day to GnR as he was a fan of the group. She didn't tell anyone and they just kept it in, but the manual still lists their original names.

Yeah it was the original VA for Claire in the Resident Evil games. Her husband was a big GnR fan.

I don't think anyone that wasn't a hardcore GnR fan actually took those names seriously back when the game originally came out in 2001.
