The new consoles shouldve launched with 2TB SSD minimum

Microsoft could definitely afford to take that hit though idk about Sony

With that "deal" you're paying 50% more than you paid for the console for 25% more storage.

Predicted this months ago because Sony flat out said the read speeds would have to match the PS5's processing power.

Combined with SSD's fast af speeds, compressed storage ability, and growing popularity for current gen gaming, anyone could tell the investment for a "legit" one was going to cost nearly the price of a game console.

Meanwhile the Xbox Series expansion cards use a new (but non-proprietary) format and cost $55 less

All these years later and Sony still hasn't learned from the Vita that proprietary storage will bite them in the ass

Because the ones that work are still a billion dollars anyways? And even among ones that would work, some of them don't even come with heat sinks.

There's basically no point in getting a 250 GB or 500 GB one either.

Huh? The Xbox one is 100% proprietary and the only one you can use with the XSS/XSX.

It's also not as good.

This HDD vs. SSD battle is starting to look like another manufactured hype scheme brought out by both Sony and Microsoft to go alongside RTX.

You mean to tell me, that my 2TB WD Passport which has been supporting both my PS4 and PS5 interchangeably is a piece of shit compared to an SSD with same storage capacity? Answer is obviously yes but load times are still for the most part managed by internal PS5 processing and memory and it's not that bad either. Why spend an egregious amount of $$$ for better reading/writing speeds...

Worth the cash for some. I don't suggest to keep all games, but some... And of course, keeping the games played rn.

Without SSDs something like the new Ratchet and Clank game would be impossible to pull off at the quality it is. The only other way to run it would be to downgrade it to like 480p, remove all textures, and load a whole level into the RAM before you play it.

As the generation goes on we're obviously going to end up with more and more games that require near-instantaneous loading so I'm not sure what your issue is.

Oops, I meant not proprietary in the sense that comparable SSDs you can get for PCs cost roughly the same amount, so while the formatting is unique for Xbox, it's not some super custom SSD that costs a lot more to produce.

I will admit though, PS5's flash storage has been making playing Genshin Impact an absolute dream on it. Areas that take upwards of 30 seconds for my brother's PS4 load up for me in 5 seconds tops.

That would easily push the price of both above 700 at launch
