2, 3 or X

Only play the MM1 if you're a real retro gamer able to play and appreciate games as they were designed to, or you will quickly join the cohort of idiots thinking the game is not great.

Oh I'm a kaizo player so I'm definitely not against an unforgiving retro game, I just don't like input lag and I don't care about the story or any shit like that. To me it is like skipping SMB1

It is not about being unforgived. It is about keeping in mind that the game initially has no save, and that the levels are designed to be replayed numerous time.

Megaman 1 is a fantastic game if you can manage to play it like a 80's kid would have played it.

Megaman x is the best one to start with in my opinion. Though trying to go back would be hard. So yeah I agree with going for megaman 2, then megaman 3 which introduced the slide andi believe megaman 4 introduced the charge attack. 5 is forgettable and 6 is cool as it is the first megaman with armors. Unfortunately they didn't really carry that over to the other megaman games. Megaman 7 started the 4 robots then another 4, which is why I dislike that one and 8. It also started the boot collecting.

Megaman x has slide, wall slide, and a permanent armor upgrade, x2 brought in using multiple characters and x3 brought innchip upgrades which was never used again. Megaman 4 gave zero more depth and his own moves. Megaman 5 and 6 follow this. X7 is skippable never play it. X8 is cool. Oh and if you want a really good turn based rpg megaman x: command missions would be great. It's only negative honestly is no newgame+ mode.

It depends on what you want to experience. If you really want to experience an old school action/platform/shooter, then I say start at the beginning. That way, whenever you play later entries, they'll become more playable rather than less (generally speaking).

I wouldn't start with X1. X1 is one of the best, if not the best MM game. If you start there, it'll almost all be downhill from there.
