Or I will stop doing other peoples work and just do my own. Don't really care either way. If they pay me I just keep doing my work + others, if they don't then I do less and get paid the same.

The biggest pay increase I've ever gotten was 12%, and that was a promotion/title change. 25% sounds like an enormous stretch.

Sounds like tc's not expecting it since they're doing other people's jobs for no extra pay and they need a high number to make a point.

I agree that it is "bold" but there is also a lot of context missing. One of them being that I am drastically underpaid compared to other people in lesser positions. They are hiring people on for ENTRY level work at a higher rate than me. So 25% might seem like a lot but that just puts me above where they are hiring new people at. I also made it higher to compensate for years of being forced to do more than others.

This sounds like the kind of shitty workplace where they want to take advantage of you and milk you for every bit they can while doing exactly 0 to reciprocate.

Hope it works out but it sounds like there's a long history of them screwing you over and its really tough to break that cycle once it's established.

So theyre short staffing you and making you do 2+ peoples jobs at once? If youre doing three peoples work, you should get 3x the pay. Simple as that. This short staffing trend has got to stop. I dont know if youve seen the topics about the pharmacist (I think its hockeybub89) whose entire pharmacy is quitting because of this corporate short staffing, but this is like everywhere. Businesses dont want to write paychecks, but they want all the work done.

Fuck that.

Yeah I was out and about today and noticed literally every food place and a few other businesses had a now hiring or help wanted sign.

I laughed at hardees though cause it also said "rookies welcome on our team" and I'm just like youre fast food. Do you really have a choice?

Ive been seeing the same thing. People just sort of woke up during the pandemic and realized that they dont want to go back to those soul-sucking, abusive jobs that underpay and overwork the workers.

These fast food companies spend SO much on advertising, but they cant afford to pay the workers a living wage. Picking on fast food workers is basically a national past time now and you literally cant afford to rent a tiny apartment and pay your bills working full time. If you go in a fast food lobby you are almost guaranteed to see a skeleton crew frantically trying to do the work of 6-9 people. Thats workplace abuse and nobody wants to put up with it. I honestly hope fast food goes under as a reminder to CEOs and business worker what is going to happen if you dont pay your workers.

Of course, I would be fine keeping the wages the same if we lowered the cost of living by about 80%.

Probly not 80% but house prices here have gone up from like 150k on average to 500k on average in just 20 years. Rent has doubled or even tripled here in the same time period for the same places....

The benchmark home price just north of me was 630 thousand last year at this time. Its currently 938 thousand.

The way shit has shot up is outta fucking control.

The cost of living has increased an absurd amount... much more than 80% as far as the cost of having a roof over your head here.

Yeah I get it. I took a week off work whem I worked construction and ended up not going back. It took having a break to realize how stressed I was.

Now I'm out injured and really dreading going back when I was halfway happy with my work when I was still working

I remember my buddy doing that when he was working at a convenience store. He had been getting paid something like 11.50/h and then the min. wage went up to 11.50, but he didn't get a pay raise, so people being hired on were getting paid the same for far less work. He was opening and closing the store. His boss denied him the pay raise he deserved, so he gave her the middle finger during the middle of a crowded shift and walked out. Within the hour he had a job at A&W getting paid more.

They were probably dreading for this day to come too, but now that you've smartened up they're going to have fork over the cash. A lot of establishments are going to have to pay higher in this market, people aren't going to accept being underpaid anymore.

Short staffing is when they have a considerably large number of people on payroll and corporate refuses to put more than a skeleton crew on the floor because its cheaper for them. Theyre making one person do the work of four so they can avoid writing paychecks.

This is what we are seeing in restaurants, retail stores, etc. Its nothing more than corporate greed and the customer suffers because of it. Then the corporation claims that people dont want to work. Youve got fifteen people begging to be put on the floor, but youre choosing not to let them work.

If youre going to make me do the work of four people, then youre damn well going to quadruple my salary/wage. THIS is a huge part of why people are quitting those jobs in record numbers. Its bad enough being paid an unlivable wage for one persons workload, but Im not going to be paid minimum wage and have work heaped on me to increase corporates profit.

Yea I worked in a video game store and they short-staffed like crazy.

Most of the time I was the ONLY employee working. I have to answer the phone, deal with all customers, process new inventory, and take trade-ins.

People would come into the store with bags and bags of garbage games sometimes. It can take hours to process 100+ games into the system.

It was fucking awful and I quit.

The guy that made the schedule, however, always seemed to be "doubled up" on shift.

The owner would constantly say how the store couldn't afford more workers, yet he had TWO apartments (one in our city, one in Atlanta) and drove a brand new Corvette around.

They are hiring because they are so shortstaffed to the point they are struggling.

Meanwhile BK is unphased. They are used to skeleton crews.

Think mcdonalds was the only place without a hiring sign. But they pay 12 bucks a hour here. Low cost of living area. Still not enough to live alone off of but would be ok if you had one other person making a similar wage.

I'm a person who believes almost everything has pros and cons and I think this might be a con of women gaining the right to work (which ofc they should be allowed to) in a capitalist society. Housing market probably figured if both husband and wife are working they could get away with charging more.
