I also learned that other authors were being offered better deals, which was a hilarious fact because the company said that the deal they offered me was the best in the business.

this kind of thing isn't exclusive to book publishing, unfortunately. when i signed the contract for my current job, i was told i would get paid an excellent salary, even though i'm 100% certain it's actually way too low for this work.

(i took the job anyway because i love the work and i still get paid a decent amount of money... but yeah.)

Yeah, sadly these types of companies prey on people's insecurities and fears of the unknown, getting them to sign a long term deal.

I assume they weren't just going to help you produce e-books, though. 30% is terrible for digital copies where there's no production cost, but it's decent for physical.

I think physical book royalties are usually around 10%? That's after the author gets an upfront payment, though, and that's 10% of revenues not profits.

Amazon has a built-in service for self-publishing your own physical books. I did that myself as well - some people in this very topic have ordered physical copies. If you mean physical in the sense of actual bookstores, that was never in the cards. LitRPG is a genre that exists almost entirely in the online sphere.

Haha, yeah, one strategy for Amazon is that they let you manually add Subcategories to your book. If you pick Subcategories that are underpopulated, it's very possible to get a Best Seller sticker to show up on your cover when people are doing Amazon searches.

So you'd say the web serial thing is why you had an audience for the collected edition? Any advice on starting a web series, where to post it, how long of updates to make, how often? That kind of thing. Feel free to throw me a mention or a pm. I've been curious about this kind of thing myself.
Sure, I'll make a more detailed post later today.

As far as starting a web series go, these are the most popular sites I know of for posting fiction:

Royal Road
Spacebattles
Various subreddits (HFY, RedditSerials, ect.)
Scribblehub
Wattpad
Archive of Our Own

There are others, and absolutely do your own research on this, but those the sites I've seen mostly work for people. Each has their foibles. Royal Road is extremely biased towards Fantasy and LitRPG especially, HFY prefers that the stories be oriented towards humans being awesome, Wattpad is a haven for romance, Archive of Our Own is primarily for fanfiction, ect. The trick is just to post it anywhere, everywhere, then prune away the websites where a fanbase didn't materialize. My story didn't take off on Scribblehub or Ao3 at all so I just...stopped posting there and focused my efforts on interacting with RR, Spacebattles, and HFY.

As far as updates goes, it's heavily recommended that you create a large backlog before posting. Currently, I have 7 chapters ahead of the public that are available on Patreon, then an additional 5 chapters ahead of Patreon that aren't posted anywhere yet. The 7 for Patreon are because people don't sign up for Patreon without an incentive. The additional 5 chapters are for my sake. It lets me stay ahead of the story and adjust things as needed. Each chapter goes through several editing passes before being posted. As serial writing can be a bit touch-and-go at times, the ability to respond to fan feedback is invaluable. The buffer lets you do so.

Generally it's recommend that you post a chapter every 1-2 days for as long as possible when starting out. People won't get invested in your story if they don't have confidence that it will continue. This is part of why writing a bunch of advance chapters is important. You can then pare this down to whatever release schedule works for you, but posting at a rate slower than once every 4 days will make it difficult to gain traction. This is especially important for RR, which currently prioritizes short, quick releases due to its algorithm.

Side note: make your story stand out. Give it a memorable title, include cover art right from the start (if possible), hook them in from Chapter 1, ect. If you're not an established author, people won't wait for you to slow ease them into the story. The trust isn't built up yet. Give them a reason to care right away.

Overall, much like any artistic venture, all of this is a crapshoot. You can do everything right and fail. You're much more likely to succeed with these tips in mind, though.

I noticed you took Book 1 down from being free online - I'm curious how that works out, switching from free to play to premium purchase. Are you concerned new readers wont dive in now that it's not freely accessible or do you think you'll reach even more people with these published releases?

Book 2 is actually 20k words longer than Book 1 and was released over a somewhat longer period of time.

I'll be getting less new readers on sites like Royal Road, but more readers on those sites doesn't necessarily translate to money. It's pretty much the same as being paid in exposure. Unless you can convert that into a VERY strong Patreon, your published release will always earn more.

First of all, congrats on publishing your novel! Second, major congrats on those jaw-dropping sales numbers and almost 700 reviews.

I'm an author as well (horror, thrillers, supernatural suspense). My debut novel released in June 2020, and a second novel released last month. Between them, I've had several hundred sales and 60 Amazon reviews.

I need to ask... how did you market your book?

I've tried many different things:
  • Amazon Ads, Bookbub Ads, Facebook Ads
  • NetGalley, BookSprout, other ARC promos
  • promoting my books on my weekly YouTube writing channel
  • requesting reviews from bloggers, review sites
  • guest posts on other authors' blogs

Up until I saw this topic, I thought, "It'll be fine. I just need to be patient and put out more books." But after seeing your success, I feel like I need to completely rethink how I market my books.

Any advice you have would rock.

Now that I've had time to scroll through the topic, it seems like you built a following by posting chapters to serial websites. Makes sense how you got off to a hot start--you already had an audience eager to read the full book when it became available.

I've heard mixed opinions on Wattpad and similar sites, with many authors struggling to get traction while others get their books picked up by major publishers or optioned by Netflix. Congrats on coming out a winner, KP.

Yeah, outside of the stuff I've already discussed in the topic, the most I can say is to carefully consider your target audience and tailor your stories and advertising to them. People respond well to what they know, and while branching out as an author is always an option in the future, establishing a foothold is the most important thing (which is part of why serial writing into published releases can be a winning tactic).

You've actually done a lot of good work so far pushing your stories, and 60 total Amazon reviews is ahead of the curve. I would also recommend putting your stories, both current and future, on Kindle Unlimited. There are some issues with the platform, but overall you have a much higher chance of breaking out and getting picked up by the algorithm that way.

Yep, I'm already on KU with both books. KU is such an obvious choice considering that apparently 90% of all ebook sales go through Amazon.

Question, how are you getting so many reviews? You've garnered another 50 since I last posted in this topic, which is INSANE. Do you have have a call-to-action at the end of your book or anything like that?

Announced the Book 2 move to KU. None of my current readers have complained, but one guy stumbling onto the story for the first time today wasn't happy!

Meh.

Royal road gave me so much sucess... so much so that now anyone who wants to join has to pay for the first 38 "chapters".
Oh and by the way, I am going to make the book as expensive as other independent publishers who never released on royal road sell their books for.

I guess I will pass on the story. I get I am not owed anything and kudos for the auther for making that hard decision, but maybe they should just move everything to kindle in that case. Why do that though if you can double dip kindle and Patreon.

Someone here might find this interesting. I ran two different ads on Royal Road, which gives you a blanket 330000 front page views for $50. I already ran a lot of ads for this story back in the day, so the number of clicks is reduced, so that's not what to focus on. The thing I was testing is that I did one ad that included the text "An Outcast In Another World - Book 1, Human Insanity", which is my title and subtitle. Then I put a different ad, same art, with the text "An Outcast In Another World - Now Free On Kindle Unlimited".

Both of these ads have virtually the exact same amount of clicks. I'm taking a single digit difference number. So the main title and the art seemed to matter by far the most when designing ads like these.

About halfway through the book now that I have had some downtime to sit through it. A few nitpicks but fairly enjoyable read, as someone who enjoys this genre mostly in manga/comic form usually.

So far female lead is probably the worst part of the story, best part being general neatness of the mechanics.

Don't buy her as a fleshed out character so far compared to the other characters. Might just be my keen eye for this particular thing as it is something I have worked hard to murder in my own writing but I have trouble giving her a distinct 'voice' compared to the other characters in the story so far.

Oh wait, I feel as if you're asking a different question. I am talking about THE female lead, as in the main female character of the narrative not the leading character is female.

On Board 8? Not very much. Criticism (constructive and otherwise) is something that every serial author has to contend with on a consistent, routine basis. It's important, but you need some safe spaces from that, and this is mine. It's highly likely that any flaws people might have to say (especially those related to Book 1) have already been pointed out several times on one or more other sites. I obviously can't stop anyone from posting their impressions here, but I'm probably not going to interact with it.
