If you don't know the Zack dresses up as an Indian episode, I don't expect anyone to watch all of the video below. Just have a quick look if you care to find out.

Wasn't the point that Zack was being culturally insensitive? Didn't it lead to him being educated on cultural sensitivity by a Native American resident?

He didn't prepare for the assignment and used Screech as a prop. Screech in turn had lines drawn under his eyes, grunted, and used a small toy axe to cut an apple on the teacher's desk in half. Zack's teacher gave him an F and set up a visit with a Native American man she knew. Zack learned a lot, but the man later died. Dressing up to redo the assignment was Zack's tribute to him. iirc...

That happened prior to him dressing up. wearing the headdress was supposed to be him respecting Native Americans.

no, u dont get it. he was culturally insensitive at first but if u watch the episode, he meets and bonds w/some indian guy, and the scene w/him in full indian gear w/the head dress is played totally straight and has a somber RIP tone

I think me and you have very different views on what constitutes something as "super" racist.

But the underlying theme of saved by the bell is that zack is a dumb asshole.

Thanks to all who answered my question.

Wearing the headdress after is a definitely faux pas on the show's part. It's one thing to have Zack behave in an ignorant manner in the beginning. It's another to repeat the folly as a tribute.

I never watched the episode, but the video in the OP made it seem like Zach learned the Native American guy died after Zach dressed up to redo the presentation.

Quickly checking a review of the episode I stand corrected, you're right. Chief Henry died the morning of or after Zack's presentation. Zack later dreams a vision of Chief Henry coming to visit him.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0695212/ imdb page for the episode

https://www.today.com/popculture/mark-paul-gosselaar-talks-controversial-saved-bell-episode-t213754 and from earlier this year

Was going to mention this. Mark Paul talked about it in his Zack to the Future podcast which is where the quote comes from within that article. It's definitely something that hasn't aged well

For those who haven't watched the episode, him dressing up like that (in the thumbnail) was supposed to be his serious take on what he learned about Native Americans, and IIRC he had learned that he had a very small amount of Native American (Cherokee?) in his heritage. The presentation was supposed to be him taking it seriously and that he had learned about it and missed his dead friend.

But, obviously doing something like this in the early 90s is completely different from doing it now so it's easy to look back and say he was racist.

The Podcast episode (that he does with Dashiell, the creator of the Zack Morris is trash videos) also talked about some other things wrong with that episode regarding Native American characterization, and I believe even had a Native American comedian on the show as a guest star which was interesting. Def worth a listen if you're interested
