I always assumed as a kid it was made by the X-Nauts or the saboteur on the train from that sticky invention the mouse dude had the formulas and papers for but having just replayed it apparently that's not the case?

The game never spells it out and the Mario Wiki has nothing. Aside from theories, there's nothing concrete about them or why they attack the train. wtf

Nobody knows for sure. There was supposed to be an additional part of Chapter 6 where the Shadow Sirens fight Mario on the train and then summon the Smorg but it was cut. Maybe the Shadow Sirens or the X-Nauts created The Smorg to slow down or stop Mario from reaching the Crystal Star.

It's seriously blowing my mind. I thought the implication was that it was related to the corporate espionage shit throughout the chapter but that was apparently completely unrelated

Maybe they just had a leftover boss and said Fuck it, throw it on the train and let the fans make up some theory about why it makes sense

Not much makes sense in that game. Stuff just happens and then it never gets brought up again.

But... I thought it was a reference to pollution since Japan are big on the environment and nature and how certain evil monsters are a consequence of civilization's creation and hubris?
