My most expensive computer was..

according to statistics, if you have a cheap computer that's less than 500, chances are all you do with it is browse the net and send emails while a low cost computer in the 500-800 range are for people who want to do more like watch movies and tv shows and as you get higher to the 800-1200 range are people who want to do video editing and more advanced software and the 1200-1600 range are people who want to play decent computer games and likely gamers while those shelling out 2000+ are hardcore gaming pc people who need big rigs to handle those intense graphics....

And then of course there's apple computers but those are just expensive either way

So let's see what the majority will vote

It's fails at grammar tho. Basically whatever works is probably good enough.

A lot. Didnt get the video cards in the middle of the bitcoin hype or anything, but a good setup with three bigass monitors is always going to run your bill up.

Totally worth it.

Spent $1,300 on a new desktop a few months ago. Normally I would have just upgraded by old one, but GPU prices are so crazy right now buying a pre-built made more sense.

And with that...pow! I'm gone!

First computer I assembled from scratch in 2002 costed ~$1,000. I went with midish tier hardware of the time. This did not include monitor or other peripherals.

My more recent upgrade where I assembled a new tower from scratch costed ~$2,200. This time I splurged and went with mid-higher tier hardware. Had it not been for the current GPU prices. Mighta been lower at $2,000.

EDIT: On side note. I love Logical Increment's descriptions of the $2,800+ range of builds. https://www.logicalincrements.com/

Current computer probably cost $1500-$2000 I guess.
I don't know what you mean by "computer"? Just the tower?

I guess if you include peripherals it's $2000+.
Computers are hard to price. I use a $10k server on a daily basis with NICs that cost $2500 a pop.

Personally I view the tower/case and internal hardware as the "computer". Monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers, etc. are peripherals to me.

EDIT: That said. Some peripherals can be on the pricier end and easily totaling $500-1,000.

I think I've built 3 over the years. something like ~$1200, ~$2100, ~$1200, not including later upgrades. almost time for a new one again.

I think I'm actually still using the video card from the second one in my work computer (though it might be the one from the third one now since I upgraded it, can't recall for sure).

My laptop was about $1000

I used to go for the $500-$800 price point, it seemed like a good middle ground for quality w/o paying top dollar for the absolute best. But apparently that market has vanished for laptops in the last few years and you either go super cheap or super expensive. So I got a "gaming" laptop...

Can't imagine how the hell desktops would ever cost that much when you can get a good gaming laptop for $1200 at most on sale, unless prices shot up since COVID.

I think when all was said and done, I spent about $1100 total for my current computer. It's pretty mid-tier but it gets the job done.

Adjusted for inflation? I had an Atari 800, which had an MSRP of $999.99, which is $4,116.33 in 2022 dollars. My grandfather spent $2795 for a Kaypro 10, that's over $8,000 in modern dollars.

More recently I bought my spouse a $4000 Dell XPS gaming laptop while he was traveling overseas installing software for the Air Force. It had two hard drives in a RAID array, a high-end video card, a 17" screen, full-size illuminated keyboard with keypad, DVD writer, and a TV tuner. But Dell screwed up and accidentally sent me two of them (and ignored me when I asked about returning one), so really they were only $2000 each. Even though the system is like 12 years old, with SSDs replacing the HDDs it still runs Windows 10 better than a lot of the newer laptops at work.
