Like, it shows up NOWHERE else and Latin is a dead language (that seems to come up all the freaking place), but in movie, game, and even book titles we use them for numbering sequels and it seems to cross even language barriers. So why do we do it?

Like, it shows up NOWHERE else

Super Bowl numbering?

Outline headings?

Clocks and watches?

Act numbers in plays?

Lines of descent?

Showing the date on stuff like coins, copyright notices at the end of credits, and on buildings?

They show up a LOT of different places.

Basically, they became obsolete in functions where math is implied, because Arabic numerals (which is itself a misnomer, because they were invented in India) are better for those sorts of things, especially once you add in the zero. But they're still used in ceremonial or traditional settings, especially when someone is trying to convey a sense of legacy or antiquity or classiness.

Pretty much exactly this. They're used because they're ancient and obsolete, which makes them feel fancier.

tradition and a misplaced sense of it being more formal or superior. same reason why so many latinates still exist in English. the aristocracy spoke French so it became a prestige language. additionally, numbers have always been written in Latin format in English since at least ~600-700AD when the futhorc stopped being used; unless the word for the number is written; Arabic numerals didn't enter English until the 13th/14th centuries, at which point English is readable and understandable for any modern speaker.
