The area that DKC3 takes place in is called the Northern Kremisphere, IIRC, so if anything the latter two games actually take place in Kremling Kountry.

So DKC2 and 3 don't feature a playable Donkey Kong nor do they take place in his country at all. Uncanny.

from what i heard diddy was made the hero of DKC2 because he was more popular than donkey
then dixie was made the hero of DKC3 because she was more popular than both diddy and donkey kong

then no one liked kiddy kong

Back in the day, I truly was expecting a Donkey Kong Country 4 to star Kiddy Kong, and once had a dream that he was paired up with some Cheeto Cheetah-looking guy.

...Glad that never happened. Not just Cheeto Cheetah, but Kiddy getting his own game in general.

Which is some goddamn bullshit. DKC3 should have brought back playable Donkey Kong, and let us switch between Donkey, Diddy, and Dixie. Instead we got Kiddie Kong.

Rare: Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong from the arcade game, and the current Donkey Kong is DK Jr.'s son. (Which I guess would make current DK "Donkey Kong III")

Nintendo: The current Donkey Kong is the same as the one in the arcade game, and Cranky Kong is just some old ape.

It was Rare's middle finger to Nintendo. (Who was allegedly controlled / glory hogging.) They wanted to show Nintendo that it was their gameplay and not Nintendo's mascot that brought people to the game.

I passed on playing the sequels because of the lack of Donkey Kong. I did end up laying DKC2 a few years ago and it was awesome. The third one can kiss my bare red ass though.

Replacing Donkey Kong with Dixie can be explained away by gameplay mechanics or the need for a little bit of female inclusion. Replacing Donkey Kong with Kiddy Kong is like replacing Luke Skywalker with Jar Jar Binks, Link with Tingle, or Dark Knight Batman with 1970s Aquaman. (Yeah, the one who waited for a bad guy to fall into the water before he could do anything.)

I like Dixie. Really, I do. But not enough to overlook Kiddy Kong.

I'm not in the habit of playing unlicensed hacks, but I think the only way I would play DKC3 is if someone swapped out Kiddy Kong's sprites for Donkey Kong's.

the big issue with DCK3 is how many gimmick levels it had
like one level you have to outrun a timer with bees chasing you
in another level the controls are reversed so back is forward and forward is back
a boss fight is a snowball battle with completely different mechanics from the rest of the game

like half the levels have a gimmick to them which just gets annoying after awhile
1 and 2 had gimmick levels but they were rare so they stood out as memorable
3 just throws gimmick after gimmick at you

DKC3 also made me resentful of the fact that there was never a Super Mario World 3.

Although there was never a Super Mario World 2 if I'm being honest with myself. Yoshi's Island is a fantastic game, but it's far removed from the original in gameplay style and was only marketed as a sequel internationally. Come to think of it, I'm kind of surprised they didn't just market Super Mario RPG as "Super Mario World 3: Super Mario RPG."

Then you had the level with the giant saw cutting the tree.
The lightning level that's set on one of the river stages.
The level where the elephant buddy got scared by a few rats and then ran through the whole level at top speed with no way to stop her.
