They dont have to. The only thing they have to do is stand by and watch like the cops at January 6th who were working with the rioters. Theyre doing exactly what theyd be doing if they just want to lose and be as ineffective as possible till the republicans take back over.

Also the Republicans have made it pretty clear that they want to further dismantle US democracy so keeping the Democrats in now may be the only way to ever get positive change in the future or even just to stop things from getting worse. They definitely could and should have done more to stop it though.

Voting does matter, but it has a considerably delayed effect; Roe v Wade's death was sealed by elections in 2014 and 2016. Voting now is setting the groundwork to unfuck things eventually. It's an absolute mess. I'd recommend anyone with a vague knowledge of British politics and a thirst for watching posh wankers backstab each other keep up with this for the next few days. It's low-stakes with a predictable outcome but plenty of twists, perfect for any fans of political dramas who don't want to spend all day thinking about how a decision will hurt thousands of people directly. This is just a couple hundred rich bastards scheming against each other to grab as much power as possible.

I just wish the opposition was a bit less shit because I neither support them nor think they're competent enough to get the Tories out in the first place.

What's the alternative? They're incapable of using Congress to get anything done as things are now. Biden could (and maybe should) use executive orders to do big things, but SCOTUS would just slap those down pretty quick. The only real way to change things at the federal level is for the Democrats to start winning more elections.

Granted, the best way to do that would be to change the party brand/platform itself, but realistically they aren't doing that until after they get killed in 2022/2024.

All they can do is try and you explicitly said you wanted them to try and they are, but no one actually rewards trying. Including the people who supposedly want it.

Biden is handcuffed on EOs by the Hyde Amendment and AOC's proposal to use federal land not only comes close to that but also opens up potential liability issues for the providers which is obviously not desired.

This battle was fought and lost in 2014 and 2016. All we can do is hope we can put things on a path to unfuck it up later. Admittedly that looks grim given the Republican Party has abandoned democracy and we very well could be one or two elections away from losing it for good but that's the position we find ourselves in.

The options are burn it all down or vote mostly hopelessly.

It is a grim picture.

Anytime I see 'Democrats need to do more' it never comes with examples of what Democrats can realistically do without the GOP shutting down their efforts.

Honestly, at this point I think people just want to be in denial of how bad things actually are, and blaming Democrats is easier than admitting the system as a whole is broken and unsalvageable.

The examples of things Democrats could be doing is abolishing the filibuster, packing the court, executive orders creating plans for people in banned states to get abortions at federal facilities, approving specific abortifacients as OTC or purchasable by mail, starting federal programs to help women gain transportation across state lines, not nominating anti-abortion federal judges, etc etc etc etc

Id settle for them to do anything that if executed would actually help people, just to show they have the will to do it.

I would want to see lawmakers who would put their careers on the line by doing things to help now even if theyll be struck down later.

Go on TV and explicitly say that Joe Manchin cares more about the filibuster than he does the rights of women. Establish a legal team to fight every statewide abortion ban based on any loopholes they can find in state constitution. Nominate pro-choice judges for all the vacancies. And officially designate federal
funds for those things people need to get abortions.

At least make me believe that if Joe Biden had a magic wand to federally legalize abortion that he would actually use it.

I mean he literally said we need to get rid of the filibuster so we can codify abortion. That's pretty close to a magic wand since under no circumstances will Joe Manchin eliminate the filibuster.

We didn't win the Senate, so it wasn't good enough, no. That's not the fault of everyone who voted, but it's still a fact that we'd be in a much better position if everyone who agreed with left-leaning policies actually showed up when it mattered most.

Holding two (Kennedy probably doesnt retire in this scenario) seats open, one of them for five years, might have been hard to maintain; who knows though. I do think that if he had continued to obstruct past the election Clinton probably would have tested the theory people were throwing out there that if the Senate refuses to hold a hearing theyre implicitly consenting.

Also if Clinton wins the presidency there's a chance they also control the Senate, too.

And just like how the common position is that Dems never did anything about codifying Roe (and in fact, did zero to prepare for the ruling despite it leaking) because they wanted it to be under threat to motivate votes, I dont think they actually give a fuck, and at this point since they wont start taking risks to help people, Im failing to see the point in voting for them to go to Washington.

I think it would probably be a better message if local Dems kept getting elected while Democrats at the national level get blown out historically.
