i just rewatched the trailer, and the impression I get is that the old characters are functionally just like equipment or summons. Maybe closest to Personas?

It doesnt seem like theyll have agency of their own within the plot, so I dont really see it as a problem for the narrative. Its just fanservice

I still think it's really stupid, but if these characters literally don't have any autonomy whatsoever than I will at least tentatively say it's possible, even if the game is still aesthetically bad (visually the style of the game just straight of looks like FEH. Obviously from an engine standpoint the game looks better than 3H).

If the characters are actually, like, characters in the story then I don't think there's any hope. It has never once been pulled off in anything with good results. Right now everything about the vibe looks like it's trying to be Genshin Impact without the gacha rolls (not ruling those out)

I want games to have their own rich narratives and be self contained, unless it's a direct sequel. If I'm playing FFXVI and suddenly they're like "You can now summon Cloud and Tidus with these mystical ancient materia!" then that would be fucking embarrasing, there's no real difference here. Fanservice shit is always a huge turnoff for me, it's so cheap and shallow.

Its probably possible to just not use them at all too other than the introduction to them. Its not a feature that bothers me in the slightest. Its a nice surprise its coming out in just a couple months

When you say you don't like fanservice, are you including FF14 in that statement?

FFXIV contains tons of fanservice but the worst stuff is all in side content.

Nothing I like about XIV involves the fanservice and none of it gets in the way of the narrative. If you removed all the past FF references from FFXIV it would have absolutely no impact on how much I liked the game.

In fact, if we get right down to it the most egregious fanservice content is XIV is consistently some of the worst stuff in the game. The entire Ivalice raid is arguably the worst story and characters in the entirety of the game and it's nothing but fanservice, to the point where I straight up tell people to skip all the cutscenes in it.

also we're not gonna pretend Awakening didn't put Fire Emblem on the map in the first place

Awakening then created the entire tourist economy

honestly, the worst part of the FE characters isn't even the hair color. it's the way the bangs of differently-colored hair form a perfectly-centered X on their forehead. hideous.

wish they'd just go back to having a proper main character rather than avatars, too.

Also FFXIV has loads of fanservice moments and callbacks to previous games in the main story what are you on about? Endwalker has numerous lengthy FFIV homages in it, Stormblood has a load of FFVI stuff, Shadowbringers post-game has you fight the FFI protagonist and so on. Not even getting into the endgame content

This is very different from "Cecil is going to hang out with the Scions now so we can fight Sephiroth. "

It's also not LITERALLY the FF1 protagonist. It's a personification that is heavily justified in the storyline.

There are categories to this. Fran shows up in that Ivalice storyline and it's like "Christ, get me the fuck outta here".

Yeah I feel this. Like the new trend of girls having blonde and black hair on opposite sides is pretty hot right but the way they mix it in this makes it look unsymmetrical which ruins it and just looks messy

He's awful unless you do a bunch of extra stuff that I can never be bothered to do, and I'm not sure if he's good even then

I'm sure that's why I avoided him back in the day. Nowadays my completionist nature would never allow it.

From the trailer I think its just going to be the 12 leads and they wont have much of a role in the story. I dont think the old characters are going to be a huge part of the game.

Rain Code was legitimately super exciting! I can't wait to see what Kodaka has in store for us.

I didnt notice if Chrom was on the big thing showing the previous FE characters, but Lucina certainly was. Wouldnt be the first time she took Chroms place

Female Corrin is a lot more popular than male Corrin. Female Byleth is only a little more popular than male Byleth. So they probably made the right choice here.

yeahhh they got Lucina for Awakening but then Fates & 3H throw factions in the mix so it's not so simple

Maybe i'm making this up but i always thought they alternated the gender of the canon hero since Awakening. I've only played Awakening and Fates but in the former they gave you the perfect number of pairs if you had a male Robin and the same for Fates with the female Corrin.

If the box art is anything to go by, Corrin M is canon to Birthright and Corrin F canon to Conquest.

Revelation can have the double-secret NB Corrin that's only unlockable if you beat Garon 20x with just a bronze sword.

There is no canon gender to any of the avatars in Fire Emblem.

I'm surprised people think the old lords will be very minor in Engage given their prominence in the trailer (and Marth's on the boxart)

Disappointing that they didn't use Ephraim over Eirika to lessen the sword spam, but I guess they wanted gender balance.

I think Marth will be at least as prominent as Sothis. I'm less certain how much screen time any of the other ring characters will get. It is fairly typical for Fire Emblem to have a bunch of characters that don't really contribute much to the main story and only really show up in supports after their recruitment chapter. Although, some of that is to get around the fact that characters can die for good. I assume ring characters can't actually die or be lost for good so the story can always assume they are around.

Yeah I was sad when I saw Eirika. She's just so...boring

I wonder how many rings there will be in total. 12 rings might not even be enough to give a ring to every member of an endgame team.

its a gimmick for the gameplay and an opportunity to advertise with an already established popular character. The old characters will be a prominent feature of the game, but that doesnt mean theyll be directly involved in the story very much.

like theyre not the actual party members, theyre equipment. I dont think Marth and Ike will be having conversations with each other or anything, they just exist to be summoned by the real protagonists.

I don't think I've seen anything more representative of the "power of the Switch" than the beautiful opening of this Harvestella demo, then when you gain control after the cutscene and are able to peak down over the cliff, everything below that gorgeous formation in the distance that the cutscene showed is an empty void of nothingness.

Just being nitpicky of course, game's got a beautiful aesthetic.

Put me down in the camp that isn't a fan of blatant fanservice in mainline games. Cheapens the experience.

Depends on the game for me honestly. Sonic Mania's blatant fanservice is great. FE Fates' blatant fanservice... ugh.
