It'll play in VLC (with all the capabilities of VLC), and it'll skip ads.
Similarly, if you hit share in the Youtube mobile app, you can open the video in the VLC app. Not only will it skip ads, but you can "Play as audio", which allows you to listen to a video's audio with the screen closed.

for the mobile trick?
Copy the YouTube link, open vlc, tap the 3 little dots in the bottom right corner labelled "more", then tapped "new stream" and the link was already pasted into the right spot.

Tried it. It works, but it buffers like fucking mad. So, I'll stick with existing adblockers and youtube qol apps

You can do the same thing by replacing the youtube url with yewtu.be

e.g. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

I did some searching around online and found that you can type a - within the "youtube" link and it will give no ads and still retain preferred resolution.

So instead of
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIqXnirQlvM

Do the following instead:
https://www.yout-ube.com/watch?v=YIqXnirQlvM

Would be nice if there was some type of script that would do this automatically though.

Perhaps something with Greasemonkey?
