I think the one thing that really bugs me to no end is forced and unskippable tutorials, especially if they're long and they try to make them "immersive" with the story. Like goddammit, I've been playing video games for 30 years, I know how to move my character, I know how to move the camera, I know how to jump and shoot a gun/strike with a weapon. Even worse is when it's like "ok, after a long string of dialogue, shoot these 20 easy stationary targets with your gun to move on!". Just let me play the damn game and if you want to so badly, give me optional prompt tutorials.

I just recently started playing a game on Gamepass (Unsighted), it was pretty fun at first until I got past the lengthy prologue, then they slapped a timer on EVERYTHING. It's an open world, backtracking, Zelda type game, I don't want to be rushed around the whole fucking game, fuck that. Dead Rising pretty much did the same thing as well.

You can turn that off in Unsighted if it really bothers you.

Games get released broken as all hell. It's not even worth it to buy games until it goes on sale for 50% off.

  • Of course, nearly all escort missions. Absolute momentum killers.
  • This one may be outdated, but not knowing when a game has multiple endings (or has a good ending that you didn't get). Lots of older RPGs are guilty of this, but the game I remember most for this phenomenon was Revenge of Shinobi on the Genesis. I assumed I had beaten it for years until reading an FAQ. I had only gotten the "bad" ending. There's nothing in-game to inform you of any other ending. So maybe the larger gripe would be secrets/endings that could be mentioned in-game but aren't.
  • Modern 2D games that insist on the "oval of darkness" around the gameplay area, ala Hollow Knight, and many, many others.

Games that "get good" after x hours. f*** you, make a game with an engaging opening that isn't a slog to work through.
This so much. I played FF14 and was told this constantly and even 200hrs later it wasn't good and since this is a game that requires a monthly fee I wasted even more money.

As for the topic, enemies that summon more enemies part of the reason I quit Elden Ring was obnoxious horn enemies.

TBF, this happens very infrequently, and the enemies aren't summoned out of thin air.

Bloody screens, it would be one thing if they were a unique quirk of the Call of Duty series but they're in everything these days. It would be bad enough if they were omnipresent in shooters but when they infect genres like jrpgs and wrestling games you know it's gotten out of hand. At the very least players should have an option to turn them off in games where they aren't necessary for determining health.

Constant voice clips when doing a super common action.

Really bad in the Neptunia games when jumping. Even worse in Xenoblade when picking up loot

Bragging rights rewards, doing a lot of work for something that has little use. Like Dragon Quest 8, your reward for fighting one of every monster including bonus fights is a ring that prevents battles.

MGS2 was bad with this too. Later prizes for tag collecting were items that granted unlimited grip and underwater breathing. Things make make up about 5% of the total gameplay. They should have given you one of those gadgets Ocelot had that made bullets miss as a tag reward.

Fucking Oblivion. Horrible lighting in the creat a character portion so often they don't look as good as you hoped by the time you see them in full light. Shoulda been a editor mode to let you see them in different lighting.

Anyways I'll name a very specific one. Mgsv last mission. Can't back out of the mission once you start unless you think to Fulton yourself out on a shipping container. It everyone is gonna think of that. I almost gave up on the game cause of that. Plus the sniper tank. Thing had very good accuracy and would one shot you even with just splash damage. I refused to succumb to using chicken hat so this was a struggle for me the first time around

i think that's kind-of okay, because at that point you'd probably want to avoid the hassle and you could do without recasting repel over and over. you get it after you've told the game you've solved it, and i think that's the right place and time.

what i would argue is that games should give players an earlier chance to say that.

i've always thought the moogle charm (does the same thing, no encounters) in ff6 should've been on top of the fanatics' tower.

Rewards that really aren't worth it. At all.
Like, would you want to find and collect hundreds of elusive and hard-to-get items so that you can replace your character's red scarf with a green one?

I hate when games take control away from me and my camera. Never take control away from the player. If you have to do it to teach them something then their is better method and your lack of creativity is ruining my experience. An example being when it whips your camera 90 degrees or something and tracks an object or event. NO, I will discover it organically.

Time limits. Even if they're generous time limits, I hate the feeling of being timed. World of Warcraft started leaning heavily on timers when they introduced Mythic+, which is essentially the main method of gearing now.

It sucks. I hate timers. I hated the timer in Majora's Mask, too, even knowing the ocarina could slow it down a lot.
