Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tuesday that he intends to ban state universities from spending money on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in hopes that they will wither on the vine without funding.

It really serves as an ideological filter, a political filter, the Republican said while speaking in Bradenton, Florida.

What an absolute asshole.

It's been mentioned before, but it's worth repeating. This should honestly be headline news. Maybe they're waiting until he makes a presidential bid next year to bring this up as dirt on him.

It's alarming that a presidential candidate can be so openly white supremacist.

Trump had plausible deniability on his bigotry. He was always just outside of something tangible. This is tangible.

Not all right-wingers are bigoted.
Not all left-wingers are motivated to get out and vote.

If we're dealing with open white supremacy, I think it'll motivate some people to get out and vote against DeSantis who would have otherwise stayed home on Election Day.

plausible deniability? Dude walked down the escalator on day 1 to call Mexicans r***** , then he proceeded to say that China is r****** us. Then he doubled down with somebodys doing the r***** and then proposed a Muslim ban. Literally, he called it a Muslim ban, until we figure out what the hell is going on.

Trump got elected by appealing to bigots. (And because Hillary Clinton would have lost a popularity contest to Elizabeth Bathory.) But I think there are a lot of voters who, if confronted with Trump's bigotry, would not fully believe it. "You always say that everything is racist." "He's not racist. He's just not an eloquent speaker," etc. For what it's worth, I haven't heard of too many people turning against Trump over mounting evidence of his bigotry. During the 2016 election, I think the danger Trump posed wasn't real to a lot of people. In the 2020 election, everyone knew what they were dealing with and the turnout to fight him was more pronounced.

When DeSantis runs next year, everyone needs to know what they're voting for and what they're voting against. Nobody should be able to start an argument, "He's not racist. He's just..." Everyone should know the kind of man he is and, for those of us who oppose racism, the need to prevent him from becoming president. If nothing else, Republicans might vote in favor of whoever runs against DeSantis in the primaries for fear that his open racism might lessen their collective chances of victory.

One would need all the wisdom and worldliness of a literal stick in the mud to make a post like this sincerely.

The most glaringly obvious reason this mentality is flawed (or completely disingenuous) is because it's exactly what DeSantis and his ilk want: to scare the Blue clean out of his state and grow / solidify his base and authority.

Heh, you don't have to tell me, I live here and have seen it firsthand. Pair that with the piles of money Florida Republicans had to throw around for things like community outreach, and Crist didn't stand a chance in hell (Crist's campaign was reportedly flat-broke up to three weeks prior to the election - I personally did not see a single pro-Crist ad on TV or the web during the entire campaign).

Personally I see no coincidence in Texas' Republican government ramping up their unholy awfulness around the same time that there was an influx of former Californians threatening to turn the state purple. DeSantis' motivations are different - since his first and only concern is his future presidential bid, and every action he and his team take is designed to raise his clout on the national stage - but the results are much the same.
