Save states are fucking awesome as they maximize replay value and is a great QoL feature. They should be an implemented feature along with a speedup button in every remaster of an old game.

Last time I tried to play through, I quit on the MM Clone battle. Not just because he was kicking my ass, but the principle of it infuriated me the most; if we're the exact same, then why the fuck am I the only one taking damage when he bumps into me?!

The trope of taking damage simply from enemies bumping into you has bugged me ever since I was a kid; sure, it was a necessary limitation for early-era action platformers, but I still hated it. I distinctly remember being immediately taken with Secret of Mana as a kid because you could literally push enemies around, and they had to actually make an attack to deal damage.

They were all enjoyable aside from MMX5 - MMX7

I "cheated" everytime, I fought the yellow devil. I feel like that's more of an exploit/oversight so if it is there, I am going to use it. (The pause elec trick) But other than that Megaman 1 seems to get slammed hard pretty often and I dunno why. It's not great but I don't think it really is much worse than the 2nd if it even is. Just the 2nd one is the one that got the series the fame.

Still use the select cheat these days though because I dont really have the patience for "wait and hit the weak point after an invincibility phase" bosses lol

3 is my personal favorite, but it is far from the best, and absolutely far from the worst.

Arguably the best is 9, and if strictly talking about the classic six that honor would go to 4.

3 took what 2 defined and improved on it giving us faster climbing speed, the slide, and Rush in place of the Item utilities. However like 2 the game is flawed. Rush Marine doesn't get many uses, and it doesn't help that Rush Jet also works in water. Spark Shock is utterly useless and ranks up there as the worst weapon of the series. The fortress stages also lack in enemies. Among other things. I'll say the game is much harder without weapons.

The Doc stages aren't that bad honestly. Yes the jet section of Needle is annoying, but easy if you know how to do it. Then there's the Doc bosses themselves. Their hitboxes are horrible. Try fighting Doc Wood without his weaknesses, it's bad.

and yeah I already mentioned how the Wily stages are void of enemies. They're also quite short, as fortress stages from 1-3 tend to be. The check-points are bad too if you happen to die. Wily 2 is so short you just get sent back to the start. The fortress bosses are also too easy, and Wily is a joke.

I didn't even think the game was that hard when I played it for the first time four or five years ago. That one boss in I think Wily Stage 2 made me want to ragequit but that's the only time I ever seriously had trouble.

Mega Man's difficulty in general is exaggerated. The levels are rather short and it's all about learning enemy placements and boss attack patterns. It's just trial and error.

The best execution of the Mega Man formula is in 7, X, X2, and X3 imo. That's when they got every single detail right in both 'eras'. After that, they started trying to get too 'creative' and flashy with it, and the games got worse.

X3 was way, way harder than X1 for sure. Most of the bosses can do 1 or 2-shot damage in the early game, and the final series of bosses can get really dicey. It's trivialized by the Zero saber and Golden Armor, though.

X1 is basically flawless. You live or die based on your own skill. There's nothing cheap or unpredictable in the entire game, which is peak game design imo.

The early X game series really did some amazing things. Like how in X3 the weather like changed at times. I really only X1 well but I watched people play some Megaman games and I was like wow X3 seems kinda okay actually. Maybe not really exciting or as bad as X7 but I don't mind some mediocre games.

X3 might have gone a little overboard with collectibles and alternate paths, but I think the level design was pretty solid and the boss fights were challenging. It's my favorite one to play through when I get out my SNES. There's such a cool power progression as you go through the final stages with the right conditions and get the saber and golden armor. By the end of the game you're an overpowered wrecking ball.

I should try X3 sometime. I think the largest criticism I heard about was it's kinda boring. Sure it is better than X7 and I liked the idea of a emo Megaman plus Axl was fine but that game is just a mess and the voice acting is horrendous.

I don't find it boring at all. The boss design is very good, and the levels have tons of secrets. It takes a long time to figure out all the different paths, and the replay value is pretty insane for such a short game. Mega Man X has a few examples of stage variations based on bosses you've defeated (Chill Penguin freezes Flame Mammoth's level, Storm Eagle crashes into and damages Spark Mandrill)

X3 has that same system, but with even more effects. Defeating certain bosses will make mini-bosses in other levels not appear, or it will make certain enemies less dangerous because of a disrupted supply chain. The various weapons are pretty fun to mess around with, and a decent number of them are actually useful for niche combat situations.

Some are definitely just all flash and no substance, but they're still fun to use for flash alone.

I highly recommend X3, but it's best if you don't use a guide or walkthrough, but instead try to find everything out for yourself. The magic is kind of ruined if you know what to expect.
