Day 13 Results:

(7) Kuja (FFIX) --VS-- Cidolfus Orlandeau (FFT) - 23-13
Orlandeau is the first "Cid" in Final Fantasy history who is not an engineer, a pilot, or a captain of an airship.

Jecht (FFX) --VS-- Galuf Halm Baldesion (FFV) - 19-20
One of the early leveling up proposals for FFX was a "tattoo system" where characters could place "tattoos" to boost stats and learn abilities. Jecht's, Seymour's, and Brother's tattoos (which they still have in the final game) are a remnant of this system where different tattoos would confer what abilities the bearer could use.

Sephiroth (FFVII) --VS-- Fujin (FFVIII) - 30-10
Fujin, along with Raijin, was initially designed to appear in FFVII, but the inclusion of the Turks saw their presence unnecessary and they were shelved until FFVIII.

Eiko Carol (FFIX) --VS-- (26) Locke Cole (FFVI) -9-30
Eikos character was referred to as Little Girl by developers until they finally decided on a name for her.

Day 14 Results:

(23) Marche Radiuju (FFTA) --VS-- Lumina (FFXIII) - 16-11
Lumina is voiced by Jessica DiCicco in the English release. She shares her English voice actress with Olette from Kingdom Hearts II.

Seifer Almasy (FFVIII) --VS-- Selphie Tilmitt (FFVIII) - 14-18
Seifer is the second-eldest character from the "orphanage gang", the eldest being Quistis.

Emet-Selch (FFXIV) --VS-- Hope Estheim (FFXIII) - 17-11
Lightning was initially going to have silver hair but the decision to make her pink-haired got the silver hair transferred to Hope.

Cindy Aurum (FFXV) --VS-- (10) Auron (FFX) - 6-28
Cindy may be considered the first female Cid in the series, given her original Japanese name of Cidney. There were also concerns in development that Cindy was "too sexy." Cindy's first version had her breasts jiggle so much that director Hajime Tabata demanded it be toned down.

Day 15 Results:

(15) Edgar Roni Figaro (FFVI) --VS-- Argath Thadalfus (FFT) - 26-8
Argaths defeat means all 3 wild cards lost in the first round.

Jessie Rasberry (FFVII) --VS-- Cid Highwind (FFVII) - 15-18
Jessie was a surprise fan favorite from the FFVII Remake. In a poll of Japanese players, Jessie ranked as the fourth most popular character from the game, above Barret, but below Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith.

Kain Highwind (FFIV) --VS-- Cloud of Darkness (FFIII) - 21-11
Though the Cloud of Darkness universally takes on a feminine form, it is officially considered a genderless being that merely chooses to appear as such.

Wakka (FFX) --VS-- (18) Ffamran "Balthier" mied Bunansa (FFXII) - 9-23
Wakka is the lowest character in stats in the tournament, ranked 130, just shy of the bottom 10. He made it in this tourney due to a somewhat decent run in contest 16 when he finished 23rd.

probably how it should be, I was thinking the other day about andy's FF music contest and how the songs getting through the nomination tiebreakers kept beating #1 and #2 seeds, lol... good times, good times... (edit: recognizing wildcards here are different than nomination tiebreaker winners there but still was thinking about it anyways!)

7 on 7 violence, expected that result since more people would've played the original than the remake but surprised Jessie kept it that close, nice.

(31) Delita Hyral (FFT) --VS-- Tyro (FF Record Keeper) - 28-9
While this Tyro is the main character of FF Record Keeper, there is another Tyro in the Final Fantasy universe. A generic dinosaur-type enemy was also known as Tyro in the original FFI.

Cissnei (FFVII) --VS-- Cid Pollendina (FFIV) - 14-22
During development of Crisis Core -FFVII-, "Tian" was considered as an alternate codename for Cissnei.

Wiegraf Folles (FFT) --VS-- Rinoa Heartilly (FFVIII) - 21-20
This match was neck-and-neck throughout the entire day. It finally ended up being decided by a vote cast with 3 minutes to spare.

Tristam (FF Mystic Quest) --VS-- (2) Cecil Harvey (FFIV) - 7-31
Tristam is the only playable character of adult age in FF Mystic Quest.

Some fun facts from Round 1:

  • Non-mainline game characters got destroyed in Round 1, managing to go an abysmal 4-18 (with all 4 wins coming from Tactics games).
  • FFX lost the most characters out of any single game with a total of 7 characters eliminated. (Although FFT matches this number if you dont split FFT and FFTA.)
  • FFVII remains the game with the most characters still alive with 12 going on to Round 2. FFVI and FFIX each come in second with 8 characters remaining.
  • Only one former champion of SMFFFC lost in Round 1. That was Zell way back on Day 2. As a reward, he gets to wear the champions dunce cap for the rest of the tourney.
  • There were 8 upsets in Round 1. Four in the first half, and four in the second half.

I also like that 3 of the 4 in the second half were settled Day 11 (including tiebreaker) and the other one was Porom joining Palom's from the Day 11 crew. Results from the raytan days, so many head scratchers, what a weird time it must have been...

Day 17 Results:

(1) Claire Lightning Farron (FFXIII) --VS-- Mog (FFVI) - 20-18
Mog is the first playable moogle in the Final Fantasy series, and the first instance of the name Mog, which has become a recurring name for moogles.

Ashelia "Ashe" B'nargin Dalmasca (FFXII) --VS-- (32) Sabin Rene Figaro (FFVI) - 21-19
In the Japanese version, Sabin is established as the younger twin and Edgar the elder, and the English Super NES script has Sabin refer to Edgar as "big brother" on several occasions. References to their respective ages are removed from the retranslation Gameboy Advance script; the reason is unclear.

(17) Ramza Beoulve (FFT) --VS-- Red XIII (FFVII) - 22-15
It was character designer Tetsuya Nomura's idea to have a four-legged party member, but it was a struggle to make it work. Some issues were that Red XIII wouldn't easily be able to climb ladders, and when he turned his tail his body would end up going inside walls.

Black Mage (FFI) --VS-- Ardyn Izunia (FFXV) - 17-19
Some of the recurring aspects of the Final Fantasy series did not appear until later on. The original Final Fantasy did not feature a character named Cid. Since chocobos were introduced in Final Fantasy II, this is the only game not to feature them, and it is one of only three main series games not to feature moogles.

Day 18 Results:

(9) Rydia of Mist (FFIV) --VS-- Barret Wallace (FFVII) - 20-21
Trailing 20-13, Barret went on an 8 vote run to complete an impressive comeback over Rydia, who becomes the first champion to fall since Zell lost on Day 2. Whats interesting is that in the Rate the Final Fantasy Characters contest that is currently going on, Rydia (8.10) is rated higher than Barret (7.76).

Faris Scherwiz (FFV) --VS-- (24) Reno (FFVII) - 22-16
The Remake boost wasnt enough to save Reno from an early demise, as he becomes the third champion to meet their doom. The match was actually close at first, tied 12-12 at one point. But Faris went on a late run that sent Reno packing to join Zell and Rydia in the winners losers lounge.

(25) Terra Branford (FFVI) --VS-- Minwu (FFII) - 26-12
Minwu is the first playable mage in the final fantasy universe with a name and storyline, as well as the first temporary playable character. Minwu also happens to be the only playable male storyline White Mage, as all others are female, though Hope Estheim takes a similarly supportive role in FFXIII.

Beatrix (FFIX) --VS-- (8) Tidus (FFX) - 18-23
Before the battle in Cleyra, Beatrix is holding her sword in her right hand, however, at the same time it is still in its holder on the back of her jacket. This also happens when Beatrix attempts to resign her position as general at the end of the game, leaving Save the Queen in Garnet's room, but still having it on her back when she leaves the castle. In the final cutscene when Beatrix and Steiner lift Save the Queen together, she still has it in the holder as well.

Day 19 Results:

(5) Vivi Ornitier (FFIX) --VS-- Ghido (FFV) - 29-9
In an early design draft for FFV, Ghido was a tree instead of a turtle and was once Exdeath's master prior to guiding Bartz and his party.

Garnet "Dagger" Til Alexandros XVII (FFIX) --VS-- (28) Tifa Lockhart (FFVII) - 13-26
Garnet, who has a birth name of Sarah, uses the alias Dagger. In an interview with the dev team, they assumed she would be referred to as Dagger by fans, but discovered that she is more commonly referred to as Garnet.

(21) Oerba Yun Fang (FFXIII) --VS-- Fran (FFXII) - 23-14
Fran is the only non-human character in the main cast of FFXII. In the Japanese release, she is voiced by Rika Fukami, who also provided the voice of Sailor Venus in the Sailor Moon series.

Yuna (FFX) --VS-- (12) Gilgamesh (FFV)- 22-16
Gilgamesh talked a big game, but ended up being struck down by Yunas superior might. He is the fourth champion to fall in the tournament.

By the time I played FFIX, I was getting more into the pattern of keeping default names rather than changing them. But the one name I did change was Dagger. I don't recall whether I gave her a different nickname or just "Garnet", but I really didn't like the name "Dagger" for her, and even in game she just seems to pick it so randomly, and it makes narrative sense to just pick a different one.

Day 20 Results:

(13) Cloud Strife (FFVII) --VS-- Quistis Trepe (FFVIII) - 28-10
When designing the characters for FFVIII, Tetsuya Nomura had wanted at least one female character to wear a skirt. Quistis was originally supposed to fill this part, but Nomura decided a long skirt worn over pants would look better and the skirt-wearing role was passed to Selphie.

Ultros (FFVI) --VS-- (20) Lulu (FFX) - 16-22
Ultros is a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy series. Even though Ultros is said to be an octopus, in his 3D debut in FFXIII-2, he has seven tentacles. This would make him a heptopus. This may be a reference to the one tentacle the player defeated before his initial boss encounter in FFVI.

(29) Aerith Gainsborough (FFVII) --VS-- Rikku (FFX) - 17-20
Aerith, along with Cloud and Barret, was one of the first three main characters created for FFVII. The dev team had decided that one of the main characters would die for the story's theme to work, and decided between Barret and Aerith. Aerith was ultimately chosen as the developers felt that Barret's death would be too predictable.

Rufus Shinra (FFVII) --VS-- (4) Celes Chere (FFVI) - 13-25
Rufus is likely the inspiration for the character Dauragon C. Mikado of the early 2000s Square Beat Em' Up RPG The Bouncer.
