I didn't like the way SBAllen ran contests or this site-- someone who actually cared about building this brand and not just coasting could have kept this place relevant I think.

But I know without him we'll never get another contest so that's a shame. Oh well.

Do you have any ideas as to how someone could have kept text-based guides and message boards relevant? If anything, Allen should be commended for staying at the helm as long as he did, especially when it comes to the contests, which were CJayC's project that Allen never really needed to maintain (and I think we can more easily admit that now since we're all older and know what work obligation is like). I care about this place plenty, and if I were in Allen's shoes, I may have said "fuck these contests" after Draven.

@SBAllen just wondering, did you try to contest Fandom decision to ruin the mobile version with ads? (Maybe the desktop version too but I have adblock there)

Hindsight is 20/20 but I do think changes to the FAQ format rolled out during or immediately before/after contests could have helped immensely because it would give people who come only during contest time the feel that the site was evolving. I do think there are legs to the FAQ format-- changing structure to something more wikilike rather than .txt dumps would be good as would integrating video walkthroughs WITH text based guides. Make sections of the video jump to the corresponding text when clicked, make sections of the text jump to parts of the video when clicked. Text based guides and videos working in harmony sounds magical to me.

Even something as simple as modernizing the interface would have helped loads though. "Text based" is taboo only because this website looks like something from like 2004.

It's easy to say "like what" when it's not clear what the answer is, but SBAllen didn't even try anything and frankly you could hire some web developers for, no joke, a few hundred bucks to help put together some site redesigns. He just did the bare minimum maintenance and then sold the site when time came.

There was a time when people who didn't come here used to mention GameFAQs. So yeah it was absolutely a missed opportunity, and that's a real shame to not even have tried anything.

Embrace the achievement hunting when it was new before other sites became go-tos? Could've monopolized three platforms (Steam, Xbox, PS) when those each seemingly maintain healthy communities spread across a few locations.

Years ago there was a small petition to change the name to Board 8 during the off-season. Maybe we'll finally make it happen.

I remember there was a brief period of time when Vlado tried to insist we shouldn't call it Board 8 but the Contest Board.

Maybe we'll just become the Contest Board since we do still run a lot of contests of our own.

Why would people think that this board specifically would be deleted while the rest of the site stays untouched? Either they shut down the entire site at once (probably without warning), or they refuse to touch anything on it.

I wanna echo what some others said here and say thanks to SBAllen for sticking with this site for 20 years. I still enjoy it as a place for community and getting game help.

Kinda funny to think that a big reason CJayC left was he was getting too old, heh.

Huge respect for keeping this site, such a huge part of my teenage years, up and running.

That said, if the site goes down before I hit 10000 karma I'm gonna be real upset.

Imagine if gfaqs evolved to use wikis, so we could be spared of all the ad-ridden cancer of fandom and wikia sites. The good timeline.

Maybe even an integrated discord server for every game that could be used as an alternative.

I genuinely a reason for me to play complicated games from roughly the PS3/360 gen or earlier that there's much more likely to be quality FAQs on this site I can use to check things so I don't need to use Fandom's wikis (or worse, Youtube videos). Reddit + a search engine can be excellent for popular games with lots of posts though.

Unfortunately got a bad relationship with Discord. Signed up a couple of years ago to join the B8 server. Then a couple of hours later it got hacked and all passwords got exposed so I said fuck that and have never bothered with it since
