Big ass cave. Easy enough to be enjoyed casually, but taxing enough that managing your resources feels satisfying. Could potentially take two trips to clear if you're going out of your way to fully explore it and beat all trainers/get all items.

Primary route easy enough to follow, but with a healthy amount of side-areas for more dedicated adventurers.

Encounters were pretty good. Geodude and Zubat have a bad rap because GF has spammed them in almost every cave for the last 30 years, but they work really well in their first outing.

Geodude having high defense means you'll be burning through your normal move PP or use up precious special move PP. Zubat is fast and has supersonic and leech life. Together they'll put a strain on the resources of anyone trying to train.

The Rocket with the Hyper Fang Ratata and the Nerd with the Voltorb and Koffing were low key super well placed enemies that could check you hard if you weren't prepared.

Overall it was just such a well-designed and balanced dungeon imo. The series has since had plenty of other really good dungeons but there's something that just feels special and unique about Mt Moon.

This is an intriguing take. To me, it was always pretty boring, since there's a very obvious single legit path to take. Yeah, there are a few side ladders you can take, but the general layout feels like a very blatant "Can you go further? If so, then you're taking the wrong ladder." And then the sheer number of Zubat encounters due to having so few other Pokemon just dragged it down.

Yes. Back then people were utterly trash at video games so even the slightest push back gave issues.

It's the first part of the game that actively pushes against the player and I think it does it fairly well.

Viridian Forest is toothless in Blue and even then you'd need spectacularly bad RNG for the Weedles in Red to ruin your day.

Mt Moon is really only a cakewalk if you chose Squirtle, who gets both Bubble and Watergun super early and just murders everything with PP to spare. Bulbasaur gets like 7 vinewhips and then has to rely on Leech Seed and powder moves. Charmander is okay at this point. >_>

If you're a solo-starter player or a grinder then yeah it's a cakewalk. But ironically enough if you play the game the way they encourage you to play it (keeping a diverse, balanced team) your exp distribution starts thinning quickly meaning lower levels and more resource expenditure.

Even these days I'll typically backtrack to the Pokemon Center after
clearing the first room just to make the rest of the trek more convenient lol.

And that Rocket with the rattata is unironically a run ender. Hyper Fang is just a ridiculously powerful move this early in the game so if you weren't keeping your HP topped up he can easily surprise a new player. <_<

Grimer/Koffing are also just decently tanky mons that make a satisfying "boss".

It's not that the dungeon itself is "difficult", but it presents enough of a challenge to feel satisfying to play.

Tbh I'm rarely a fan of labyrinth dungeons. I almost always prefer "here's the main road, you can go check out some other stuff if you want" over "hope you have a notepad or a strategy guide, scrub!" >_>
