7 Remake's combat is too tedious and grindy. I hope they make the battles go faster in Rebirth. If not, then turn-based is still better.

To be honest, if you learn the ins and outs of the system and exploit enemy weaknesses and stuff, fights go by much faster. So I think it's fine, though they need to work out how the boss phases work. Never liked how I would set up for some big damage only for the boss to be at the cusp of transitioning to a new phase, which just wastes potential damage.

That's why I mentioned legs. FF15 got 5 million in a day and then took a year for another million. Xenoblade 3 sold 1.72 million in 2 months but after a year was at 1.84 million. Fire Emblem Engage had a 1.6 million launch, similar launch as Three Houses but seems to have stayed stuck around there with only dozen thousands per month while TH continued seeing hundred thousands a month for several years. Given that they haven't been talking much about FF16 and its overall presence since makes me doubt it's a game with legs.

Also they said that FF16 didn't meet their high expectations.

I've said it before in FF centric boards: Squeenix has all the tools they need already established to modernize menu based RPGs. They just need to put them together in the right way.

Take the core battle presentation of FF7R. This entails the following:
  • Enemies and the player party will engage in low/zero impact "mock combat" under AI control for visual background (I.e. no standing in a line facing each other)
  • Entering a menu to issue a command induces time slowdown or freeze to allow decision making and control.
  • Add dynamic, showy camera angles for large attacks for elaborate visual presentation.


Add onto this an elaboration of party member actions in a way that it's not just a single "best" action in most cases. This can be accomplished by one or more of:
  • Building "combo" actions based on previous ones (FFXIV).
  • Building secondary in-battle resources for drawn out fights (FFXIV).
  • Adding powerful long cooldown abilities gated either by a timer (Octopath max BP actions) or a regenerative resource (older FFXIV).
  • Buff or debuff heavy gameplay (Octopath bosses).
  • Cross-class interaction based on status effects or similar (Octopath, such as Drastic Measures).
  • Timed supportive actions such as interrupts, redirections, or mitigation (FFXIV).
  • Juggling or repeated stuns based on stringing actions together (FFX-2, FFXIII).


I could make other or more detailed suggestions or just say things I'd like to see (drop stagger, job systems), but I'd call those two main principles the core. For better or worse, if they want main stream appeal, I'd say the visual presentation is as important as making it play good, even if to me personally, the gameplay is more important.
