Online someone made a claim that only 10% of the population could do this. And I looked it up and saw some sites even saying it was less. However that just doesn't feel right. I had a higher bench than that in college (not now by any means). So that just doesn't seem right. Like literally I would never been on the top 10 of anything good in this world.

Top 10 worst at grammar-yes. Top 10 worst singer-yes. But not something on the good side.

When I was in the Air Force, but I only do some real light body weight stuff and yoga to compliment my running now. Back then I was the complete opposite and only wanted to lift and do zero running. I wasnt super strong but I could get ORM of around 250 on bench. My strongest lift was always deadlift though, it just felt really satisfying to do.

i could probably bench 225 in HS at a point too, but the only lift I remember from them was squatting around 300 when I was about 140-145 pounds (Im only 55 back off lol)

I think most people have the potential to bench press at least that much, but the majority of people never put in that basic work.

10% of the ENTIRE population? Including women, children, old people, and infants? That actually seems high when you put it that way.

I maxed at 285 in high school.

Haven't lifted seriously since. Tried to get back into it last year and could reliably push 185x5

Very briefly, and it was 2-3 reps.

It might be my one rep max, but I never do those.

I pressed 200 (~90kg) once when I was in peak condition. Tried a second time and the spotter had to step in. That's my limit, and I never tried anything close again. Just wanted to be able to say I benched 200.

My absolute max ever was 245 but 225 was my standard max for a long time. But there were some people at the gym doing easy sets of 225+ and I would never have gotten there.

In no world will I believe 1 in 10 people can bench 2 plates.

99.99% of women definitely can't for starters. 99.99% of children couldn't (maybe a few 17 year olds with good genetics)

Even 1 in 10 adult males is far fetched. Some guys are just naturally gifted and maybe can do it without training but there's not enough men that need to train for it that actually do. I specifically trained for it and only got to 200 though I have a bum shoulder that probably limited me.

My current max is 265 at a body weight of about 180 lbs. Took a lot of consistent training to get there though. This time last year I weighted closer to 230 and my max was maybe 160.

When you put it like that, that makes sense.

And yea, my max during my senior year of high school when I played football was either 225 or 235. In college, after not playing sports or lifting weights for 2 years, I had a health class instructor who was doing some optional survey that I decided to participate in. Wanted to see participants 1 rep max in bench press and had an assistant record everything on a chart. I think he asked if I felt comfortable doing 185. I stupidly and arrogantly thought it'd be easy since I hit 225 in high school. Couldn't even do 185 lol.

If youre fat and have less distance between your hands and chest, it might be easy.

I was always the best in my class at pushups. Never got close to 225 on bench.

that's really good, i think the benchmark for benching is your bodyweight. i think squats is 2x or 1.5x can't remember if thats for squats or dead lifts

This is all mostly true but the bolded portion isn't really saying anything. You may have trained for it, but the actual training you did and where you started at is so variable that it essentially means nothing. You could have started benching 45 pounds once or twice a week, but someone else that would starts able to lift 135 a few times consistently a week is gonna have different results, and he's also gonna have different results from someone that trained exactly like him because genetics is an even greater variable we have to account for.

Wider grips can screw up your shoulders more so just be careful of that.

Those studies are correct because they count people who can currently bench 225. If everyone on earth started going to the gym and training bench press then of course more than 10% can achieve this feat, but thats not the question.

Its about currently, not potential.
