Dunno.

The places I order from give you a 10% discount if you pick it up yourself, so the delivery cost is built into the bill if you don't.

Do people who pay for shipping on an item just randomly give the person who delivers it more money?

I'm sure that if it became a universal-except-for-a-few-edgelords-on-the-internet cultural thing to tip your delivery driver, delivery drivers would eventually end up in the same place as wait staff.

My understanding is they get paid like a couple bucks per delivery, at least after the initial entry period for signing up and delivering.

So yeah, they get paid, but without (good) tips, they're likely losing money cause of or barely breaking even on gas

it depends on the platform, but my understanding is that they only get like $2 or something per delivery, so the only real incentive to be a driver is for the tips.

the companies get away with this bullshit because the drivers "are not employees" and we, as a society, have just accepted that monumental level of bullshit as okay.

This is also correct. Base pay on DD and Uber deliveries can get as low as $2, so its often not worth the time or gas to even take orders that are that low.

It really should be renamed as a bid since thats actually what it is, not a tip. But as long as these shitty companies and are publicly traded, theyll keep on doing whatever they can to push the burden of every possible dollar down to customers and away from their own stockpile.

We get like a few bucks. My company would give me a single dollar, from the delivery fee but "at least I got minimum wage".

The company takes a majority of the delivery fee. Old bosses used to tell me it was for delivery drivers insurance.

Out of everybody that needs tipping delivery drivers need it the most for being forced to wear down the second most expensive thing you'll pay for in your life. And gas used on a job is no longer tax deductible.

Being a delivery driver was a horrible cycle and I'm glad I finally got out of it. All of your savings end up going back into your car. Even if you work on a nice part of town it will make you go postal.

No that's not how this works lol. If your gonna be lazy and order food at least tip your driver minimum $5. It's just common courtesy

No food delivery company is going to hire drivers on salary, and pay benefits not sure what fantasy world your living in. Must've found one of the internet edgelords who doesn't tip.

I was paid minimum wage but that still wasn't enough. Like I said in my post, most of my savings ended up going back into maintaining my vehicle or buying a new one. It was a horrible vicious cycle that I don't wish on anyone.

I've always done my best to treat delivery drivers right, but I'm kind of starting to hit a point where they need to at least meet me halfway. I live in a college town, so when I order through a delivery site I'll throw the tracker up on a second monitor and inevitably watch as a driver picks my order, then proceeds to pick up like 10 different orders from surrounding places, then drops them off at a whole bunch of dorms, then inevitably leaves my food lukewarm or cold on my porch. And this is with a personal policy of never tipping less than $7 and tipping 20% on larger orders while specifically never ordering from a place that's more than a 12-minute drive because I feel bad that some of these delivery places will let me order from restaurants that are a half hour away.

The only reason I even use the GPS tracker is because I put a note to please ring the doorbell so I know my food has arrived and most drivers just ignore that, forcing me to actually track my own delivery to make sure I get it when it arrives.

I get that drivers are trying to game the system, but I'm kind of starting to get to that point where I want to put cash tip in the notes and only if you ring the bell, cuz if drivers are going to half-ass my order and drop something off cold no matter how much money I give them that at what point is it fair for me to start giving less?

I've found the only way to combat this is to get the $1-$2 extra 'priority' that way they pickup your order and deliver it first.

As somebody who drove for a local company that only brought one or two orders at a time, they knowingly sometimes give you food that's sometimes already been done for 10-15 minutes before it even gets in the car. As a driver you're just expected to take it.

I did doordash for years, let me explain how it works and what the reddit drivers tell you-

Food Delivery apps isnt a tip though, its a bid.

Tip implies its based on service, where its more accurate to call it a bid for service, against other orders.

Driver is waiting for an order, he gets a 5.00 order(3 from the app, 2 for tip) he declines it cause he has to make atleast 25.00 an hour, and this 5 dollar order could take 20 minutes, not worth it. Then he gets a 15.00 order(5 from the app, 10.00 tip) and he damn near breaks his phones touchscreen trying to confirm the order.

Thats how they work. And the drivers know whether its a tip or not based on distance. A 10.00 order going 10+ miles means its not a tip, whereas a 10.00 order going 1-5 miles is a tip cause of the amount based on the distance.

its ridiculous. If you use apps like DoorDash the food items are already marked up, then you get a delivery fee on top of that, and then a tip for the driver. A $8 item comes out to $21 and people are willing to pay it. Ill just drive myself.

Walmart doesn't involve driving around all day putting miles on your car that cost gas and maintenance money.

Here's the thing, you aren't owed this service. You can either pay what the person providing the service requires, or you can go get your own food.

Exactly. 25.00 an hour doesn't mean we get all that money. We require 25.00 cause of gas, car maintenance, and taxes(as were contractors, not employees). So 25.00 an hour is really like take home 15 dollars, cause 10 goes to cover expenses.

This is why drivers dont really take orders unless they get 10 dollars plus, you can do maybe 2-3 orders an hour, and it has to add up to 25 dollars or else your paying the customer/doordash to deliver their food, and not making money yourself.

Just tip 5-10 dollars and the order is likely to be picked up.

Its shocking that people think 25.00 an hour is somehow egregious and they should be making only minimum wage or whatever, its like the math doesnt add up unless they make 25.00 an hour. Thats why people tip the way they do, cause they know its a huge burden on the customers cars. a 5-10 dollar tip is the average. The people that dont tip or tip like 1-4 dollars are the people that complain about not getting their food or waiting for hours and never find a driver. Well theres a reason for that. Driver is not a charity case, he has to make money.
