I remember hearing about a game that had its release cancelled so late that strategy guides (I think Prima) were already available in stores for the game. Does anyone here happen to remember what game that was?

Another cancelled game showcased heavily in Nintendo Power was Taitos Time Diver: Eon Man. The action sidescroller followed Dan Nelson, a man whose descendant put an end to crime. But with a time-traveling organization out to kill him so that his descendant is never born, Dan traveled through time himself and used a variety of unique power-ups to stop them. In the February 1993 issue of Nintendo Power, the game received a four-page strategy guide including tips and level layouts. Time Diver was scheduled to release later that year. But for unknown reasons, it never did. Luckily, various prototypes have been uploaded online, showing that it was almost complete.

Ninja Taro is a cancelled US localization of Ninja-kun Ashura no Sh ( ), a platformer released by Jaleco for Famicom in Japan on May 10, 1985. It was planned to be released by American Sammy in the United States. In addition, the game was ported from the arcade game originally released by UPL, with the arcade version being released in US as Rad Action (released by World Games) or JT 104 (released by United Amusements).
This game was also featured in Nintendo Buyer's Guide Vol.1 No.1b[1] and Nintendo Strategy Guide Vol.1 No.2[2] of Game Player's magazine published in August 1988. The game was also exhibited at Winter CES in January 1989,[3] but was never finally released. The reason for the game's cancellation is not known, and no prototype ROM has surfaced as of 2023.
Ninja Taro, released for the Game Boy in the US in 1992, was a localization of another Ninja-kun series title called Sengoku Ninja-kun ().

Neither really matches what you're describing? I had never heard of what you're describing before.

I've seen it mentioned before, was a more recent game than that. I mostly remember it because someone here posted about it in the past, was talking about the guides getting marked down to 10 cents each since the game was cancelled.

But thanks for trying to find the game, imagine it was difficult to find that info given my own luck with Google.

Yea I had to rephrase it several times just to get anything relevant to turn up. Initially google just kept sending me articles about the company that used to make the strategy guides going out of business in 2018.

I am curious if anyone else does remember it because it's an interesting story.

That could possibly be the game, but given it was a port, maybe not. Still, feels like that would be the right decade.
