Team names do make it easier for fanbases to grow from a further distance away. Like let's say there is a guy from New York and he is like "I'm a Lions fan!" That seems like a pretty acceptable thing to say.

Now if said guy were to say "I'm a Detroit fan!" The question then becomes "wait what why aren't you a fan of New York you live here?" Then said guy is just like "I hate New York." Then a fight breaks out.

Plus, the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders are traditional North American style names. They were both used in the old NASL when I was young and all the teams had "normal" names.

Who wants to be named Liverpool anyway?

I really like the no-mascot naming convention, it sets the teams apart from other leagues and just sounds cool. Like, I love that my local team is Austin FC and not the Austin Bats or some other dumb mascot.

side note, MLS merch tends to be way better than other leagues merch. Theyre the only ones not making the same tired old huge snapback hats that add six inches to your height.
