like a person who was promoted like a couple of times at least , maybe in a senior position but they were completely unqualified at all. Could do none of their job. Possibly that they passed on you to promote this guy....

Pretty much this but sometimes it's just a matter of who is willing to work longer or more flexibly than just being able to handle the job

There was a person that got promoted to supervisor that many felt didn't fit the role. She "resigned" after a few months.

Contrary to the common notion that Employers want smart qualified works, that is often not the case.

Employers very often love a useful idiot.

I work for a moving company. Basically if you work here for me than six months you start getting promotions. We had a guy that got all the way up to GM being the laziest fat fuck on the planet. Took them 7 years to finally fire him.

When o worked for Walgrees as a shift lead there was an opening for an assistant manager which was literally a $30k pay raise. Applied and wasn't even considered because no degree even though I'd been there 1.5 years and could and was doing the job. They hired a guy and I literally trained him to do the job, he was really nice though and even he was like "wtf why didn't you get it?"

My previous job would rotate through managers every couple years, but they typically at least somewhat knew what they were doing, or at least appeared to.

However the last year I was there, during the end of pandemic and return to office period, the newest managers they got basically started allocating a lot of managerial duties across the team and they would frequently be out on vacation or working from home, when everyone else was expected to be in office 4/5 days.

After about 6 months everyone started realizing doing the manager level work for them wasn't just temporary coverage, and even after them being there over a year the managers still couldn't answer any basic job function questions when asked. So like half the team, the more experienced half, started quitting or changing departments. I ended up quitting too since I wasn't interested in having manager work diverted to me without a significant promotion.

>_> This topic made me realize that my work place has done this several times.

They hired a guy as a manager right out of college, with no experience working in the field. I actually can't remember him doing poorly, but he stepped down into a lower supervisor position with in like a month, and then stepped down from that, too. He was very clearly not prepared for that type of role (he was a good guy though).

Years ago when I applied for a low-level supervisor spot, they gave it to some one else. She was terrible. Hardly did any thing, hardly showed up, ended up getting a higher up manager fired because they fucked. She came in one day with a black eye because his wife punched her. So yeah, good call! (I'm actually not bitter about it, she was not a good choice, but I don't think I was at the time either. I have been promoted multiple times since then)

I'm sure there are more. It happens pretty often in retail, I guess.

This is the case for my manager. He's actually not bad, but a bit green. He went from TL, jumped supervisor all the way to manager. His boss, the director probably saw in him a lesser paycheck than he wouldve had to paid anyone else qualified AND will ask less questions when asked to do certain things.

Once you get labeled at work it is almost impossible to escape it.
Certain people will only allow you to be who they want you to be.

And yes, being smart and suited to the task sketches out a lot of managers.

Yeah not difficult. are you management? Supposedly retail management is a lot more. Notoriously retail is easy, but well below avg in pay
