After a certain point, people should stop caring about muh economic growth.

Infinite growth with finite resources is the ideology of the cancer cell.
That point comes after we manage to get off this planet. Once humanity grows the economy enough to free us from this rock, economic growth doesn't matter anymore.

I agree with the general idea that childcare expenses and housing have increased in price too much over the last few years.
I don't particularly think that if those things became cheaper, the birth rates would drastically change though. It'll help sway many of those on the fence, but the type of birth rates of the past seems done with.

People were having lots of kids with one parent staying at home, and living in small 1000sf house and a single car with 4 kids or whatever. People could do shit like that today if they really wanted to, but they obviously shouldn't.

We have much higher standards of living and for most of us it's not worth significantly decreasing that lifestyle for more kids. And that's completely fine.

We only have 1 kid and we don't plan for anymore, but it's not purely a monetary or work hours issue. It's just tiring. I'm pretty sure parents these days devote a lot more parenting hours into their kids than parents of the past as well, so spreading that amount of time over more kids is even more difficult. Parents devote a lot more time into their kids than they used to.

Nah. There's been plenty of times where children were an investment with actual returns. Our current economic situation means they are massive burdens for their parents, despite providing positive value for society as a whole. This indicates that having children should be subsidized more.

Yes, declining birth rates is a problem, one the whole developed world(and some developing countries too, hello China) has. But we have immigration to make up for it. Fuck you GOP.

Oh no, 2%! I know it isnt a good thing, but it aint the end of the world.

Our economy is resilient, itll survive.

I dont want to have a child if I cant afford to buy a house or make enough. I always told myself I dont want to be one of those parents that has kids when Im not financially ready that has to live off government programs and overall be unhappy cause they can no longer afford anything. I cant imagine the stress involved when you need daycare.

Kids arent an investment, they give you utils (satisfaction) in economic terms. I love my kids, they still absolutely love me even in their teens so I somehow did things right.

Their aunt & uncle passed from COVID so they got an inheritance which is set aside for college. That absolutely helped with our finances.

Declining fertility rates also mean it will be harder to bear the brunt of Social Security payments, particularly as boomers age into retirement. Baby boomers are estimated to exert "peak burden" on the US economy in 2029, which is when all boomers will be 65 or older.
"We will have a great deal of trouble figuring out how to pay the retirements. The promised retirement payments for senior citizens Medicare and Social Security are going to go in vast deficits," Buchholz added.
If the birthrate doesn't increase soon, he estimates there will eventually be two full-time workers for every retiree, down from around 20 workers per retiree in the 1930s.
"That is simply not sustainable," he said.

Same reason why they expect employees to care about shareholder value.

There was an article posted her or somewhere else a few weeks back about CEO's and stuff complaining that people no longer want to increase the value of their businesses and only care about their wages.

I'm not having kids because of knowing what's to come thanks to human caused climate change and the clear ineptitude to address it effectively by our world leaders. 2025 is now NEXT year and none of the countries that made their promises for 2025 have been on pace to meet them.

But I also don't have a partner. Was never interested in finding one. And at 37, I think I'm just too old to be playing that game nor be having kids. Having kids is for the youths.

I am perfectly happy making a bit above average and able to live comfortably due to being single. I can buy whatever I want and it not hurt my bank.

"dragon economy" sounds about right. The dragons (capitalists) just want more people to plunder and exploit so they can furnish them with a bigger hoard of wealth.

So, I don't have much interest in a family or children knowing the kind of society they'd be born to.

So glad FolkenRawr highlighted this

What about all the sectors of the economy based on luxuries or novel innovations aimed and sold to the middle class and working class? Nope... sorry vacation destinations, travel agents, sports car manufacturers, day spas and salons! - we need those millenials to breed more children to meet projected quarterly growth in 14 years!

Hmmm... sounds like they want us to "stop being selfish" so they can be more selfish.
