Looks like we're mostly arguing between 6 to 8 games and all are pretty valid. I go with this because SMW is remarkable as a success and to pushing the SNES into homes, DKC was a huge deal and also pushed platformers forward, Super Metroid created an entire new genre of gaming that is named after this game, and finally CT is a case of legacy. It's not a commercial success relative to the console but it's one of the biggest games that stands out from it in every discussion, its soundtrack is still considered one of the best ever, and it is just plain one of the best examples of a near perfect RPG. Basically, it's here due to acclaim. Which technically is what I think puts Super Metroid over SF2.

I get thinking SNES should have an RPG here but not a single RPG mentioned in the topic is actually playable on my SNES. I think having no PAL release is a pretty large con and since the SNES has a top tier library even without RPGs, I think that's better.

On one hand, 'murica...but upon further thought, that's a persuasive point about lacking European releases. Have we had another game with this issue in this topic series? Not sure that we have this past week at a glance.

I think Mario World is a good candidate because I feel like it's instantly associated with the SNES. If you ask someone to name a SNES game, World is going to be the first a lot of people think of. Like it didn't do anything revolutionary (other than introduce Yoshi, I guess), but I think it's almost ubiquitous with the console, kind of in the way Mario 64 is with the N64.

Yeah I don't think being revolutionary is necessarily a requirement. It's the best selling SNES game and one of the most popular picks for best game in the series. It's also a launch title and was bundled with the system, so for a lot of people it was probably the first game they played on the console.

A normal console I'd agree I just hold the SNES library in really high esteem. Lot of great stuff there to the point where the obligatory bundle in pick is kinda selling the console short imo. Is it a bad pick? No. But I absolutely don't think it should be considered obligatory

I also think Donkey Kong Country basically fits the role SMW does if you're going for play rate and notoriety. Yes it sold less but I feel like it not being a bundle in and releasing 2/3s the way through the SNES life makes its sales more impressive.

(And I do not like the DKC games)

Yep. There's also just too many better candidates. Despite it being a really good game, it's still only maybe a marginal top 10 game on the system. I'd imagine it's probably in the 10-15 range for myself.

it's funny but DKC vs LttP on this category is one where i just have to side with DKC as the bigger deal. for scope of the SNES it was huge; the visuals and music made a revolutionary push towards the mainstream, it helped keep the SNES alive right as the PS1 was launching, it scared the shit out of Sega and helped continue their series of mistakes. bluntly it was just plain more popular and had become the representative of the SNES, getting viewed as the successor to Mario.

i mean, it didn't really play out that way in the long run today but for a console rep i think you've gotta give it the nod over Zelda, even if more people think LttP was a better game.

Really? its a Top 5 system seller and most of the series blueprints come from it. It also consistently finishes higher than 64 in most top games rankings

what did 64 do other than 4 controllers?

lol Tomb Raider and Crash duking it out and SotN just sneaking in as a personal favorite.

Now SNES, wow, this is tough

I'll have to think about this cause it was Street Fighter II: The World Warrior the game that really put the console on top, the first big arcade experience at home, the game everybody wanted. But then there's SMW, DKC, LttP, Super Metroid, which were also pretty big on their own.

Basically every game follows MK64's template for races, not SMK, such as three laps being the standard, longer tracks so you can't lap the field like you can in SMK, the properties of items (as well as introducing a few recurring ones, like the fake item box, triple shells, the gold mushroom, and the blue shell). And yes, having 4 players is a huge deal.

Not sure what rankings SMK finishes above MK64 in though, but I imagine it's not actual fan rankings.

I picked SotN cause that's grandma tier of difficulty, but then I remembered you could choose Gon in Tekken 3, hold towards opponent, smash O, and defeat the entire game, and takes much less time as well.
