Basically every game follows MK64's template for races, not SMK, such as three laps being the standard, longer tracks so you can't lap the field like you can in SMK, the properties of items (as well as introducing a few recurring ones, like the fake item box, triple shells, the gold mushroom, and the blue shell). And yes, having 4 players is a huge deal.

Not sure what rankings SMK finishes above MK64 in though, but I imagine it's not actual fan rankings.

4 players and size sounds like just advantages that the hardware had rather than the game itself and how time goes on, its like saying Halo 2 is more important to the Xbox than the original because it had online play (granted both would make a Xbox Rushmore)

and general rankings for best game is where I often see Super but not 64 (our top 100 in 2005 gamefaqs had SMK but not 64, if you want a example). in fact, 64 did pretty poorly in reviews at the time! (Around 80%). I think the general opinion has actually just shifted like how World/3 get compared.

but I didnt want to make my opinion about 64 vs Super. my thought on these system rushmores was less to make it about games itself but to think of games that were important for the console itself, and I cant reasonably argue for CT or Super Metroid over it in that regard. but I guess thats just how I view these

Why is Spyro winning the poll, anyway? I went for Tekken 3 because button mashing + short arcade mode seems reasonable.

well yeah, MK64 could do things SMK couldn't, but every other Mario Kart game still borrows from MK64

I don't think the Halo 2 comparison is valid because it doesn't do much different from Halo 1 besides have multiplayer. Like if you think all MK64 does differently from SMK is have 4 players, I'm guessing you haven't played them in a while!

Super Mario World (lock)
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (lock)
Super Mario Kart (coulda been DKC, SM, or MMX...but this mighta been the coolest multiplayer had ever been on consoles up to that point)
Chrono Trigger (coulda been FF3/6 or SMRPG...but there should be an RPG, and CT feels the most timeless)

Shout-outs to Super Mario All-Stars.

Remove: Chrono Trigger
Add: Donkey Kong Country

I see arguments for MMX and SM that I've made for MM2 and C:SotN, right, and MMX/SM are both great games that I much prefer to any in the DKC-series. That said, DKC's trilogy was bigger than MMX's and I didn't see SM at the front of my Walmart's video game aisle. Hate to have it all be Nintendo for this system's Rushmore, but here we are.

On one hand, 'murica...but upon further thought, that's a persuasive point about lacking European releases. Have we had another game with this issue in this topic series? Not sure that we have this past week at a glance.

I brought up a similar point when people discussed FF/DQ on NES but neither made it. I wouldn't complain if any of them made it on, I like them a lot and it's definitely deserved, but I just thought it felt weird to have something there my SNES can't actually play and since there are super strong games in the run otherwise I brought it up.

Interestingly we did get Final Fantasy Mystic Quest out here. FFVII is the actual first FF and obviously that's the one that made releases here the standard.

In the case of the NES the whole console was not a big deal at all in Europe so I wouldnt have worried about it there, but the SNES actually was pretty big in Europe (Mega Drive sold more but the gap was actually not huge) so I can see not releasing in Europe counting against most of the RPGs.

Speaking of Europe, another reason that Donkey Kong Country is such a big deal is that it is the game that made Rare. They had had plenty of games before but this was the one that catapulted them into being probably the premier developer of the second half of the 90s. Still wild that Nintendo just let them go like that, would not happen today.

I think Mario World is a good candidate because I feel like it's instantly associated with the SNES. If you ask someone to name a SNES game, World is going to be the first a lot of people think of. Like it didn't do anything revolutionary (other than introduce Yoshi, I guess), but I think it's almost ubiquitous with the console, kind of in the way Mario 64 is with the N64.

Yeah, I think this is just it. It would be extremely weird to be seeing like a "greatest of SNES" selection and SMW somehow not being on there. It's pretty much the face of the system. Besides, it did introduce many main stays in Mario and has held up perfectly for over 30 years.

I dont know the exact timeline of staff departures. But Nintendo passed on buying Rare around the time of Banjo Tooie and thats still more or less peak Rare time. The sale then happened a bit later. I cant envision current Nintendo letting a successful partner they already have a 49% stake in go. My understanding is Rare thought Nintendo was going to buy them.

Also nominate highly-acclaimed games that do not hold up well anymore.

Eh, Turbo and Championship Edition are substantial improvements over the original. If you've played a lot of either of those and the original, they don't feel like the same game beyond having the same roster.

People use Street Fighter II as an umbrella term.

Like whenever someone mentions Street Fighter III, 99% of the time they mean Third Strike because barely anyone plays New Generation or 2nd Impact.

Then I guess I'm the exception because I use the name of the game that I mean instead of just calling every version Street Fighter II. So if you guys want to group them all together even though SF2 and Turbo have their own distinct claims to SNES Rushmore, then go ahead, I guess.

I think they're more distinct than something like MGS3 and Subsistence or Final Mix versions or what have you.

I would make a distinction between Persona 4 and Golden because I think those games are different enough to warrant mentioning which version you mean, but maybe that's just me.

Depends on the context, but if someone asked me what my favorite Persona game was, I'd just say Persona 5 even though I prefer Royal. Generally I just use SF2 as a blanket term for all versions and only specify when necessary, which I don't think it is here.
