Swimming is so easy to do once you learn. It becomes second nature real quick.

Just gotta kick your hands and feet in a downward direction. And be mindful that when you exhale, you might sink a bit because your buoyancy is reducing. On the flip side, breathing in will make you float easier.

Get a private swim instructor to come to your pool to teach you how to swim 1-on-1, at your convenience. It should cost you about $40-$80/session, where each session should last 30-60 minutes. If you do 3x/week, you should be able to swim freestyle within a month. ~$750 investment to learn basic swimming is absolutely worth the investment, especially if you own a pool.

After that, feel free to stop or learn more for other strokes.

I grew up in a pool all summer long. I have memories of my grandpa teaching me to swim with my eyes open under water by placing coins in the bottom of the pool when I was just 4 or 5 years old. To me when I joined the Navy and was in boot camp doing the swim test it blew my mind there were people that were 18+ that didnt know how to swim.

Its like when I meet adults that dont know how to ride a bike. Its like how the fuck did you grow up and not learn these kinds of things?

I learned late. My self learning moment was instead of holding the wall edge and kicking, I held my hands lower, flat against the pool wall close to surface and kept myself up by kicking. After that moment something clicked and I could swim. I tried using that to teach my kids and it failed miserably so we hired an instructor for one-on-one lessons, worth it.
