I feel I can agree with this.

the Chappelle Show had higher highs, but Key & Peele was more consistent, IMO.
Tbh only shit I remember from Chappelle show is "fuck yo couch" and "cocaine is a helluva drug"

I remember lots of shit from Key & Peele

Nothing really affects comedy. People always need it. They need it so badly and they dont get it, Seinfeld said. It used to be, you would go home at the end of the day, most people would go, Oh, Cheers is on. Oh, MASH is on. Oh, Mary Tyler Moore is on. All in the Family is on. You just expected, Therell be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight. Well, guess whatwhere is it? This is the result of the extreme left and P.C. crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people.

That idiot is parroting the arguments of people who wouldn't even allow those shows to be made if someone tried to make them in this day and age, especially MASH and All in the Family.

AITF had a bigoted character but he was almost always the butt of the joke and the show had a progressive message. MASH? These people would be shrieking that Klinger is a groomer and the show is trying to turn kids gay/trans.

The number one rule in comedy has always been to be funny. If nobody wants to watch your shit, it's because you aren't fucking funny.

If comedians aren't finding success, it's because they can't create an original punchline to save their lives.

The whole "comedy is dead" has been a talking point for Conservatives for a long time. They will point to a lack of adult comedies releasing in theaters as their "proof" but all that proves is that companies would rather make cheap horror films or big blockbusters, and that comedies are more streaming only these days.

These people love "offensive comedy" but are quick to cry when they are the butt of the joke.

Great point. As always, many of the problems conservatives blame on the "left" can usually be traced back to capitalism.

Studios are no longer willing to invest in mid-budget sized comedy movies due to risk. It's either big budget IP movies, or low-budget horror (as you mentioned).

That being said, there's absolutely no shortage of really good comedy shows. Abbott Elementary is a great example.

Right. I was just talking about when the punchline is simply "the person is gay"....which in the 90s was still a common joke in more brain dead comedies.

Jerry is literally just the old man yelling at these kids and complaining about how things were better in his day. Plenty of comedies around, just not the sit-coms Old man Jerry wants to watch. There are tons of comedies that come out every year, but they are on the various streaming platforms; that Old man Jerry doesn't know anything about.

Even when Seinfield was airing, what were the conservative comedies? Married with Children might the only thing.

It seems like shows, comedy and otherwise, can actually get away with more and push the envelop further than would've been acceptable back in the late 80s and 90s when Seinfeld was on the air, and there are definitely still plenty of fantastic comedies out there. I think the real change is that society at large is less amused by tired, outdated jokes where the punchline is homophobia or racism or whatever, and certain comedians have refused to change with the times.

Though I actually wouldn't have made that accusation about Jerry Seinfeld, I think his comedy style is stale and outdated for unrelated reasons.

I actually think comedies nowadays have only gotten better in the sense that there are an even wider variety of different and even newer kinds of comedy. More Comedies that's for a smaller niche audiences. Also the ones I want to watch and interest me are more easily accessible. Back in the 90's and older, all you had for comedy series is what was on TV. No internet until the late nineties and the streaming services starting with YouTube didn't come to until around the mid 2000's.

This sounds bitter old man nonsense, who doesn't understand today's entertainment industry.

similar thing happened to Richard Pryor in the 70s. He chewed out a group of gay activists for waiting until the civil rights movement had ended to start protesting. Pryor was outraged because he felt the gay rights movement did nothing for black people during the civil rights movement and then they said their struggles were equal...Pryor did not hate gay people (he even had a week long fling with a guy in the 70s), but he felt they were piggybacking on the civil rights movement after many activists had already been killed, harmed,etc...

He's wrong. There was gay activism during the civil rights movement and it was one of the main factors of getting homosexuality removed from the DSM. He just didn't hear about it. Maybe he wasn't looking. Maybe it just all got overshadowed by the battle against segregation.
