The bear is just a bear, it will do bear things.

The man is just man, but their intentions are unclear, and they are quite suspicious-looking.

Should have seen the dude that made a meme with faux blood and everything.

Dude was so mad that women would prefer the bear that he drew them getting mauled.

Yeah, the whole thing is hilarious to me. Instead of stepping back and wondering why women are saying the bear they just lash out at women.

You did a better job with scenario stating the man was suspicious looking unlike what I've seen on social media. Cause the question I posed on social media never got answered.

Also I don't think social media version mentioned time of day cause I asked what time of day was it and how was said man dressed. Like a hunter in the day time I wouldn't be top worried about other than maybe get the fuck out of the woods cause he's gonna be shooting. Or a camper at really any time of day. Basically I just asked if he looked like he belonged there for some fairly common activity a man would be in the woods for. And I got crickets.

I'm not a woman so yeah my expierence differs but I have ran across a strange man in the woods before and he probably thought I was a strange man in the woods. We both simply walked away from each other. He possibly missed out. I was walking back from a party we where having in the woods and they where the type they woulda given him a beer or two. No clue why he was out there though

I'll take the man but I'm also a man

I've seen this posed a few different ways, like "Stranger (man) or bear", "strange man or bear", or just "man or bear". I interpret them all as if both the man and the bear are predators trying to kill me, rather than "maybe it's a nice man?". In any case, it's really not hard to see why women would choose the bear, given that (in both worst case scenarios) the bear would definitely be less creative with what it intended to do.

Arguments Ive heard against this as a male who understands why women would pick the bear.

choosing the bear wont help get you laid bro

response: thats fine, it wasnt my intention and Im married anyways.

why doesnt a woman just carry a gun with her

response: the human mind is smarter than an animals instinct allowing for ambushing, and overpowering of said armament from the lady, which will then be used against her.

ya well more men are killed every year than women

reaponse: yea usually by another man, thus proving the point.

the bear will kill you dead! EVERYTIME!

reaponse; there have been under 100 deaths by bear in the past 50 years. Not only that but a bear usually fucks off unless it is protecting its cubs, or extremely hungry.

You actually have a few chances against a bear. They don't just attack unproved and, depending on species, can actually be just yelled at to make them leave.

There's also the fact this wasn't a question about which you'd rather fight.

The man. If the bear decides to attack me or chase me Im completely fucked and will die horribly. Even if the man has bad intentions, Id be able to fight back or at least potentially outrun him.

I guess the man potentially having a gun does give me pause, though.

Either one may, or may not, attack you. The question is, which one to do think is most likely to be a danger to you? The question is not 'which would you rather fight?'. The man may be harmless; the bear may just spend the night asleep.

At heart, though, the question has nothing to do with bears at all. It is really asking women how safe they feel when alone with a strange man. A lot of women answer 'not very'; a lot of men then reinforce their point by responding to the supposed insult with violent misogyny.

Having spent many nights camping in bear country, if you follow just a few simple safety procedures, bear's not going to bother you.

Hell, even if you don't follow the procedures bear's unlikely to bother you. There are single digit (maybe low teens if things get nuts) bear attacks in the US every year

Man, hands down.

Man is more predictable about whether or not hell give me trouble. Less likely to based on my size and demeanour (which the bear wouldnt give a fuck about). If it did get rough, my chances of overpowering another random are fairly good. Against a bear who is aggressive, Im pretty fucked. Plus, hiding from a man in the woods at night, either to escape or gain an advantage, is pretty feasible. A bear? Nope.

If the man is just a man doing normal human things in the woods and the bear is just a bear doing normal bear things, you should choose the man.

Otherwise youre a crime podcast addicted paranoid suburbanite that bothers the police every time you see a pedestrian.

If the bear is just a bear and the man is actually sUsPiciOus then you choose the bear. No one should choose a plotting weirdo over a bear.

I think most people are aware that it's a problem that there's a subset of men who are dangerous. The real discussion should be about what do we do about it instead of just restating the initial problem in ways that are somewhat sexist.

Like it wouldn't be ethical, but would it at least help if we were to just force all men to take HRT (testosterone blockers and estrogen)? To know that, we'd have to do more research on what exactly makes men violent in the first place. Is it because of testosterone? Is it because of the way boys are typically raised? Is it that women are equally violent and men just have more ability to more directly display their violence? If we knew the answers to those questions, we may be able to figure out a less invasive solution. But we're eternally stuck on step 1 of this problem and that's just frustrating for everyone.

Bears are predictable. Men are not. Don't encroach, don't leave food out, if you see a cub stay the fuck away.

I've been camping and seen bears, as long as you respect em they're usually chill and perfectly content to just wander around and eat stuff.

I've also been around people camping and had a range of experiences from actually being shot at to being offered food.

I'll def take the bear, every time.

Maybe bears are more chill to hangout with than I thought but I wonder what the numbers would look like apples to apples. Injury rate per 1000 encounters: crossing paths with a bear vs a fellow camper.
