drain willpower->soulsap->desecration on axe/dagger dual wielding scoundrel

scoundrel uses rage, battering rams to backstab zone, then uses daggers drawn

for trash mobs, desecration on an archer->rain of arrows generally is enough

I've been thinking of getting either Divinity: Original Sin or Pillars of Eternity, or maybe even Planescape: Tides of Numenera for the PS4

any opinion of which one to pick up?

true

i like divinity since it is a bit more lighthearted and the combat system is amazing with its build possibilities and numerous ways to approach a fight

I hate the combat in Pillars. Way too much going one because it's real time with pausing, which I kind of hate.

pillars' combat is pretty flexible too

once you get a grip on the DnD 4e based system you can execute some really powerful combos by chainining a series of spells that make the next spell in the series more likely to hit (ex: miasma->weakening interdiction->chill fog) which leaves all enemies blinded, at which point your archers and such can fuck 'em up good

the nice thing about pillars is it has a lot more optional content for the player who wants to push the envelope with gameplay mechanics exploitation

d:os feels awesome at low levels but by mid level a well built squad will destroy all the content in tactician with minimal effort

I get all of that, but I wish it was turn-based. I can't keep up with everything, but I'm also really horrible with using keyboard and mouse

i just made extensive use of pause bg2 style

pillars did start to run into issues when wizards got their per-encounter spells though

originally it wasn't "one spell becomes 1/encounter" but rather "one spell level switches from per rest to per encounter"

so at high levels you could sling fireballs at the enemy until they were dead and your motivation became maximizing dex to boost cast speed and get them out asap

Yeah, the only complaint I have is how the game is played, but that's an issue with me because I like turn-based combat and using a controller

If you get Pillars, get the Grieving Mother on your team as early as you can. Find all the summon statues will also help you greatly in battle.

grieving mother is a cipher, the 'best' class in POE

her build stat-wise is actually total shit for it but she's also by far the most plot-significant NPC in the game, and even if you make your own cipher you should have her on the team

No it isn't.

The writing in Pillars is real fucking bad, plus its quality jumps around all over when you "gaze into souls" of NPCs since backers wrote really awful fanfiction.

Pillars is a game with tons of purple prose which deceives you into thinking you're reading something deep and poetic but when you start to make sense of things, it is like reading a really shitty journal from a girl in art school.

simple solution: don't gaze into souls.

the backer content is bad, yes.

the content obsidian wrote themselves is great. far, far better than the corny, poorly VAed writing in Divinity Original Sin 1. DOS has a lot of five minute speeches that you just want to click through, except they're done via like 15 voiced panels.

Yeah man, I love Obsidian's self-masturbating sessions in which you get a massive infodump dropped on your head when talking to an NPC that's supposed to be a commoner and not a fucking historian. Nothing better than having a question that should have a simple answer from a simple man become a drawn out explanation of events and situations prior.

How about your dialogue options which has the writers impose on you what your character should be. You'll get five options, four of them is your character being a Knights Templar and the fifth one is fucking off or opening fire. This is the worst shit ever in a game in which you create your own character because you're very obviously playing what the developers want you to play only they didn't have the heart to go all in and just give you a proper main character you can loosely guide.

Divinity isn't much better and the first game especially is way too heavy on trying to make you laugh when they should be trying to immerse you. But Pillars is not good in any category. Divinity can at least fall back on having a fun combat engine which lets you do some cool shit, Pillars plays like AD&D for Dummies.

we'll have to agree to disagree on that--i found the PC personality styles immersive in PoE. i felt that in particular, it was rewarding for PC paladins since they actually gain stats associated with consistent personality responses tying to their subclass.

it's almost exclusively the souls that have the stupid ultra-long meaningless descriptions, and i guess some of grieving mother's memories which are more of an acid trip really.

If you get pillars get the expansion too. Imo they are better than the vanilla.

I guess the biggest problem is the trashy enemy positioning in pillars vanilla made dungeon kinda boring.

The white march fixed most of that, every encounter feels a little more unique. The story/quest related fights are awesome and the optional new bosses are great challenge while fair.

Plus i love the soulbound weapons they add, which is basically a weapon that level up with you after you do some kind of mini quests.

The story is good too and give a wider window to the more mythical part of the lore.

Either way you cant go wrong with all the games mentioned itt. They are all p great
