Numbers are for the weak!

<_<

Okay. Mostly bad characters with a pretty good main character. Battle system is just all kinds of screwy. Music is bland. Art style is bland. Awesome minigame. First disc is pretty decent at drawing me in before the story starts to swing south on disc 2 and never recovers. That. ****ing. Prison. Lame final boss with one part having very good music. Terrible main villain. It has a dude who walks around in front of a girl playing a piano and gets a leg cramp. It has an albino who talks funny. It features Gilgamesh.

Add it all up, and...

4/10

Below average game, but not all that bad really. It's somewhat enjoyable overall.

Yeah that's what you get for mostly being in agreement with me in the other topic, fate had to arrange a reality check for us

Really, there's about two or three songs in the game that I can really say I like. That does not bode well for my overall liking of the soundtrack. And I really hate the kind of dull, faded out colour scheme in a lot of places and how empty the world is (which is another matter but it is involved in my general sense of "this world doesn't look very exciting"). The one area I'll give it credit visually is Quezacotls attack animation, which looks awesome as all hell.

Even the worst game that I have ever played, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, I would still rate it somewhere between 2-3. Unfortunately for FFVIII, It will receive a score closer to that than a 10. I haven't decided on the final number yet though

I rather enjoy FFVIII's music and art style but I can see why someone wouldn't. I think it has some pretty gorgeous tunes and backdrops, personally. Huge part of my score goes to that sort of thing. Aesthetics.

I don't know that the world feels empty, either, but I think VII's and IX's feel... less empty.

Mainly the fact that there's these huge continents with absolutely nothing on them. The world is heavily squished into the north west portion of the map with the rest being 95% useless. It also doesn't help that most of the locations don't really stand out to me as being exciting/interesting places beyond my eternal curiosity at the capital of Galbadia being a mysterious land where geometry and physics are alien concepts whenever someone has a sniper rifle.

FFIX's pretty bad about this, too, especially considering 95% of the world's population lives on 1 continent.

I think the gameplay and world make it an interesting game. The characters are mostly bad, though they work well enough in-game not to ruin the experience - but they're mostly forgettable. Story is the same way, but it has some nice standout moments. Pretty good game overall, but not great.

4.

The game starts decently. Squall is an amusing character and I like the first disc quite a bit. The system is also fun to try and break, although drawing is very "zzz." Luckily later in the game you get to refine magic out of items, which makes it a bit less tedious.

Then Disc 3 comes along with its random ass plot development that I will argue to the death doesn't make sense and is poor writing that people only accept cause it's cliche for the main guy and the main girl to get together. The game just does a terrible job of conveying that Squall actually cares about Rinoa before that point... and okay, I get it, he's aloof. He should be hard to read. But we can literally see into his thoughts and there's still minimal hints that this is going to happen other than "well it's the leading guy and the leading girl."

Oh and while we're talking bad writing, the orphanage thing in Disc 2. But that goes without saying.

But yeah, decent gameplay and Squall held back by exceptionally poor writing and a weak non-Squall cast.

While we're talking better writing the "Squall is Dead" theory makes this game like 10x better. If that was actually what the intent was and they made it clear in the ending, it would be amazing.

No

Please, no

The theory that basically makes the game have no meaning (and I've argued about how meaningless the time travel kind of makes it feel under certain interpretations. This is beyond that even) because it's a completely irrelevant fantasy, robbing the story of any sort of payoff or conclusion or anything, in the name of being kind of weird, that theory would be better writing?

No.

Pffft, FFVIII does a pretty good job of subtlely conveying the idea to me. There are lots of hints that I pick up on in that regard.

You'd have to change the ending a bit, but I don't see how it'd necessarily lack a payoff. Basically you have to twist the story into Squall soul coming to terms with the fact that he's dead, and change some of the writing to drop stronger hints that this actually happened over the course of the game, but it'd be a spectacular "holy crap what" of an ending. This isn't really all that different from the plot of some other games and movies out there. (won't name names out of spoilers, but yeah, the story concept totally works)
