Snow areas that aren't filled with slippery ice are good. Also good are forest areas that aren't just the first area in the game and aren't just giant mazes like the Lost Woods, and ideally have no spiders.

Not necessarily looking for specific examples (although feel free to provide them), but just looking for general preferences. I don't mean it has to be the setting for the entire game, but maybe you prefer the setting of a certain location within the game.

Do you prefer a setting where everything is futuristic and highly advanced? Maybe something like a post-apocalyptic future? Maybe some urbanized, highly industrial setting? Maybe something rural like a farm or small village? Or maybe something like a Medieval setting? Or maybe a certain environment like a jungle? Fire levels, ice levels, water levels (lawl)?

I'm just trying to throw some examples out there to try to clarify what I mean. I don't want the question to be too vague.

Subttitles o- oh, that kind of setting.

Anything's fine for me, no preference one way or another. Just... just don't make the biggest dungeon a very very boring monotonous design from beginning to end.

Historical settings. Rural villages also good.

My favorite levels in video games tend to be fire levels. It was true in Super Metroid, Super Mario 64, and both Super Mario Galaxies, at least.

My favorite "gaming world archetype" is that of the "dark, gritty, and hostile world", although when it comes to Nintendo I prefer stuff like Super Mario Galaxy and The Wind Waker with their cartoony aesthetic (and Super Metroid blends the two together).

honestly, i'm fine with anything as long as it's fleshed out.

i loved FFXII's Ivalice, FFX's Spira, Shadow Hearts 2's WW2 era Europe/Asia, Xenosaga's sci-fi space, and Dragon Quest 8's fantasy settings all a ton.

i really hope one day we get a good space travel RPG based in our universe on semi-plausible science. like star ocean 3, except where the space stuff actually matters. how was SO4, in that regard?

There are two things I really love more than any other settings: sky-based areas and sunsets.

Sky-based meaning like City in the Sky in Twilight Princess, or Castle in the Sky that Miyazaki movie, big floating airships, that kind of thing. I'm absolutely in love with those tropes; mankind's ability to take their environment, actions, and ways of life into the heavens, above it all, and always gives off a mystical, whimsical sense of adventure.

And sunsets...well, they look nice. Sometimes, that's all you need(or for a nice visual metaphor about two old guys in their waning years for Metal Gear Solid 4's final boss fight, whatever).

Put those two together, I'm sure to enjoy it.
