From: Sakurafanboy | #004 I'm pretty confident SOPA is going to die on Thursday. The government may be idiots, but I doubt they'd want to piss off literally millions of people.
Yeah, politicians may be slimy and on the take, and they can hide a lot of their shady decisions from their constituents, but if this passes and something like Facebook or YouTube goes down, that's something Americans would actually care about and notice and get upset over.

I wouldn't underestimate the power of the entertainment industry, or Congress's incompetence when it comes to technology. I highly doubt the supporters of the bill truly understand the unintended consequences that would come about if it passes.

Yes, people would/will get upset when Facebook gets taken down.
After the bill had already passed because the senate doesn't have any idea how technology works.

I'm wondering why Facebook and Youtube themselves aren't doing more to raise awareness of this bill....

LordoftheMorons posted... Facebook and Google (which owns Youtube) are fiercely opposed to the bill; not sure why they're not trying to rally their users, though.
I suppose they are waiting to see if it passes committee. If it does, I suspect it will be on.

From a technological perspective there is absolutely no difference between what this bill proposes and how China blocks websites. It's pretty scary. (Of course, they claim they're only going after pirates, but the language is way too vague for other sites to be safe).

Yep. The worst part is that even though I'm almost certain the Supreme Court would overturn it, the court system is way too slow for the damage not to have been done.

No, the worst part is that the vast majority of US Citizens, even ones that actively spend time on the internet (though primarily facebook, youtube, etc) have no clue that this bill even exists.
Well, better ask my girlfriend how she accesses facebook in China so I can get to work on that.
Goodbye, half of the good parts of the internet. I know the government won't be dumb enough to block things that would actually annoy enough people to do anything, like say Youtube as a whole, but they'll go after smaller things that will individually annoy thousands of people instead.

Not sure on exactly when, but when I was looking I saw an article saying that the democrats are backing down on tax hikes for the richest Americans. Man, they're rolling over on everything these days.

Originally I was against all of these ideas. Now I'm kind of hoping they pass as many ridiculous laws as possible just to see if people actually care enough to do anything. It makes me wonder at what point people actually start caring and no longer wonder why I criticize even the smallest law that infringes upon common sense and our rights.
