You really just want to focus on the roles you like most at the beginning. Later on you'll end up maxing every role anyway, so the only differences are going to be what you choose for abilities early on.

if you can't do that yet, you'll be able to soon. it's explained in a tutorial.

but i stagger him once, do about 50% damage to him

then he starts going nuts with eye of bahamut (whatever that does) and giga-graviton and blast wave

and by the time i stagger him again, he's back at full health

and over time he starts OHKOing noel for some reason

He probably stacked wound damage. A Wound Potion should fix that.

Can't really give you a strategy since I mopped up this guy so quickly. Maybe I was just overleveled.

Because FFXIII-2 is the first game you've ever played? Only reason I can imagine why he would be your toughest boss ever. He's really not that bad.

Closing gates lets you redo a location from the beginning, letting you take other Live Trigger options or letting you fight bosses that you couldn't beat in the past, like full power Atlas. Really just needed for the sake of completion.

Yeah, you'd think what with how they freaked out at the thought of l'cie that time itself unraveling and paradoxes everywhere would shake them up a bit more.

but then at the same time, you have things like serah (essentially just a random girl) who seems to instantly be able to wrap her head around time travel and paradoxes and how to resolve said paradoxes after listening to a bunch of inconclusive conjecture.

i guess all i can do is roll my eyes and keep playing, though, because despite all that, i find this game strangely compelling.

The sheer amount that Serah and Noel cheat time knowingly is pretty hilarious. For one of the random sidequests, they leave some device to gather data for 300+ years, get it in the future, and bring it back with all that data intact to the past.

More questions: are there missables? or can I effectively go back and close a gate to get everything/see all possible storylines?

And does it matter which gate I use to enter the historia crux after finishing an area? Like the Sunleth Whateverscape with the Giant Flan, I could have used one gate earlier, before following the flan all the way to the end of the path, but I decided not to. How does the order I go through gates affect things, if at all?

Each gate opens up a new area, and you have to go through it once, but after that you don't have to touch the gate ever again (since you can just press start to go back to the Historia Crux any time). The order you go through the gates does not matter

There are no missables. You can close a gate any time to get everything you missed, so long as you found the gate seal for that time period.
