Never seen the movie, I read the book though. Great read. Completely different story then the Hunger Games series, which I preferred, but a great read nonetheless.

i like the movie and all (this was a rewatch), but it really bothers me when there's not a whole lot of thought put into the backstory.

the logistics are wholly irrelevant. it's a movie about brutality, survival, and the extreme ends a society goes to to correct social disobedience (among other things). believability just gets in the way, and is not required in every work of fiction.

i'm not saying that the lack of believability ruins the movie, but i just kind of wish that there was some more effort put into the premise. i'm willing to take things for granted, but this movie kind of asks for a lot in that area, imo!

I dunno, there are certain things I'm able to suspend belief for. Government-sponsored teenager violence is one of them!

And yeah, that's it. I'd probably never look at the special features, director's cut, or copy of the second movie, but man, that case is awesome.

the director's cut additions sound interesting, particularly the basketball scenes. i dunno though.

if i wasn't able to convince myself to spend $35 on game of thrones season 1, i doubt i'll be getting this anytime soon. :(

Kind of want to buy this after how disappointing the latter two Hunger Games books were. I've watched the film for the first one and didn't really like it that much. Kiriyama was very uninspired, I think.

I thought the movie was terrible. I mean I don't remember the details why but I do remember cringing half the time while watching it.

Why the hell are volumes 4 and 5 so ridiculously priced? 1 through 3 are all in the 15 dollars range and I can't find any website that sells 4 for under $60 and 5 doesn't even have a used one under $100 on Amazon. What gives? They only make a very limited number of 4 and 5?

Book > Manga > Movie imo

Manga has a bit too much weirdness and goes waaaaaaay over the top with some of the more grotesque stuff. Still like it better than the movie, though, but I do like them all.

The main protagonist obnoxiousness is turned up to 11 on what was a scale of 10. The designs are horrible. There's moments where the art looks like John Kricfalusi's style of closeups, except the manga is 100% serious. The manga bloats itself by giving characters unnecessary backstory that doesn't add to them at all.

But I'm weird. I like the movie the most out of the three. Maybe it's because of Beat Takashi or the fact that I prefer my sociopaths to have as little explanation of what made them that way.

When I first heard of Hunger Games it was from one of my girl friends who explained the premise to me and I was like... "Battle Royal?" and after some convincing made her watch the movie version. She still likes Hunger Games more. I have yet to read or watch Hunger Games.

They're really not all that similar outside of the general premise. Really in THG the actual "battle" only goes on for maybe half the time.

The manga is the best version of Battle Royale.

Getting the most backstory for Mitsuko, getting well-developed characters overall, it was just superior.

The movie though...holy s*** the movie is bad. The movie was basically: There's like, seven heroic characters and only two real villains, so let's have the endgame be all the heroes and one villain. And no character development whatsoever except for Noriko, who is easily the worst main character.
