Civ 5 is also currently available for free on Steam, until Sunday.

I'm now downloading it to see if my laptop can handle it.

Civ V is easier to get into if you're new to the series. The combat is better, but diplomacy isn't as good. The Gods & Kings expansion coming soon should help that, though.

Yep

and here I was excited for the chance to get it for when I had a computer that could handle it

(Assuming my laptop can't because while it can run IV, it lags hard between turns at endgame)

One of the things they're working on for the expansion in Civ V! Faster turn movements for the AI.

Yeah that might be a reason. I've never really been very militaristic. Maybe one war early if I can sustain it, and another if I can beat an enemy to gunpowder, but that's really about it.
