i watched planetes! looooved that one too, though it's a lot darker than trigun and more bittersweet (trigun kinda escalates and by the end the stakes don't feel quite as high anymore)

planetes manages to raise the stakes seamlessly and it had infinite heart and ambition

i watched 14 episodes of it and didn't like it nearly as much, actually... could be because i was so much older when i watched outlaw star... if that's really the case then it makes me sad.

i never watched trigun in its entirety, so i don't have a solid opinion of it yet. outlaw star has a cool setting and stuff, but yeah, it kind of doesn't go anywhere towards the end iirc.

my favorite anime is probably clannad and clannad after story, but those are romantic comedy/slice of life.

Man, why do so many animes have 26-episode single-season things when they could have had 52. I want to have my cake and eat it too.

But I know a lot of people don't agree with me because the shows might be looser like that, but I grew up with American stuff like DS9 too and that went on for 175 episodes and got better and better. And they were an hour long too dammit.

'Filler' is such a relative term though, there are so many glorious examples of shows with more character-focused episodes spacing things out between big plot elements that actually work in the West.

Fair enough though, yeah.

Outlaw Star though, it really felt to me like it should have had a second season with another antagonist or something. That ending sequence just makes me feel like that through and through. Obviously, not as much with Trigun and especially Bebop.
