In your opinion

.

Saudi Arabia was voted on to the commission Tuesday along with four other Asian nations – South Korea, Japan, Iraq and Turkmenistan.

The World Economic Forum’s 2015 Global Gender Gap report ranked Saudi Arabia 134 out of 145 countries for gender equality and it is the only country in the world where women are prohibited from driving

While the commission is tasked with working exclusively towards “equality and women’s rights,” Saudi Arabia discriminates systematically against women through both its laws and practices, says administrative director Hillel Neuer of watchdog organisation UN Watch.

“Every Saudi woman must have a male guardian who makes all critical decisions on her behalf, controlling a woman’s life from her birth until death. Saudi Arabia bans women from driving cars. Why did the U.N. choose the world’s leading oppressor of women to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women?” writes Neuer on UN Watch’s website.

At least five EU states must have voted for the Saudis to serve a four-year term on the commission in the secret ballot. Saudi Arabia’s candidature received backing from 47 of the 54 member states of the UN economic and social council Ecosoc in the vote.

I think it's tricky. They're not very nice, but how do we get them to play along if we don't include them? I dunno.

Probably not best to get your ideas of history and politics from children's cartoons.

Turkmenistan has Oil and Gas so it comes up quite a lot in politics.

Not exactly, because there are women in Saudiarabia whose rights need to be safeguarded. Flat-Earthers don't oppress others. That's what makes it a bit of a more delicate situation.

The optimistic part of me wants to think that this might affect Saudi's culture in a positive way in the long term, but that's a very tiny voice in my head.

so, to fit the example, it would be more like a flat-earther who beats anyone that argues against him (including his own family), burns globes and rip apart physics books, and is then voted to be head of NASA.

Utterly ridiculous decision.

I imagine large deals, business and political, were main drivers under the table.

The only way they could gain any credibility, is if they charged every Saudi person who infringed liberal standards for women.

Not enough jails exist in the world...

Closer but not really. The reasoning is that if they don't get to be a part of NASA in the first place, why would they ever be inclined to start believing the Earth is round? And again, it's a little delicate.
