Yesterday, me and buddies went to the bar for happy hour, among them, let's call him Fred, left his credit card at the bar as we relocated to a table as more friends came by. The waitress returned it to him before we left and we had no problems paying the bill and going about our business. Enter this morning, when he checked his bank balances, he saw that his card had been charged for a Verizon bill, an AT&T bill, and a bloody Hulu account. None of them are his and he suspects it done by a bartender due to the timing of the charges made and who had access to his card at the time (while we were at the restaurant).

So my question is to you, what are our options? I told him to talk to his credit company to get the name of the accounts the bills were paid for and to file a police report. If it's the bartender who did this, it's quite likely he does this on occasion. I don't really want to go back there now because of him even though I kind of enjoy their food...

I'm pretty sure the credit card company's fraud protection can reverse it for him, but I don't know the likelihood of getting the name of the accounts

Yet it's quite likely he's done this already and got away with it. I suppose he's gambling on people not noticing and it's worked so well for him.

At least we have 4 companies to contact, maybe one of them will give. I hope.

I kind of want this guy in jail. It's a small island and we have enough crazies and douchebags running around as it is. I'm gonna push for a police report.

This is pretty simple shit. Once the charges post, just call the CC or go to the account and dispute the charges as fraudulent. Your friend will get a new card and the charges will be taken off. They'll investigate on their own.

Btw, people don't need your card to charge shit, especially online. It could just be a coincidence it happened the night you were at the bar.

1. Call he CC company and dispute/refuse the charges.
2. Contact the companies/services that were charged and try to find out as much as you can about the charges. When/where/who/how?
3. Follow up on the answers you get from 2.

I don't know about the theory about the bartender. People are dumb, but most aren't that dumb. I would be more surprised that the bartender did it than that it was a coincidence and someone else had his info. A police report likely won't get anywhere.

Are you positive it wasn't another person at the bar who used it and then turned it in?

Yeah, there's definitely a possibility it could be someone else. Or it was someone who got his info from another time and used it during at that time period. I want to say I know the names of the bartenders, but there's also the chance of them using work names as well.
