I got it back in maybe March, and read about 140 pages, then gave up because it was so boring and long. I read a few more pages today, and it's still pretty bad. Why is this considered a classic?

Quite a lot. But this is boring. The events are dull, and I find Irish culture very boring.

Quite a lot. But this is boring. The events are dull, and I find Irish culture very boring.

it isn't about the events; it's about giving a complete picture of the character

It's one of the most difficult modern books to read. Wait until you get to the final chapter with multi-page, stream of consciousness sentences.
