If not, why?

Ever since I joined two new communities (one online, one IRL) I made new friends but they are in their 30's, which is a shocking new experience to me. Despite my initial reservations, thankfully we are still mutually intelligible. And I swear if you don't know their age, they look just any of us. How crazy is that? And I'm not just talking about their physical appearances, which are deceiving as they go, but also their mannerisms. It's kinda amazing but also a bit scary.

Like how do you really know if someone is normal or in their 30's if you can't tell at first sight? Not that I'm ageist, of course, they are good people and I'm happy to call them my friends. But it would surely be nice to know how to tell them apart. I mean, it's for the greater good, right? My upbringing prepared me to be friends with most anyone, but I know some of my younger friends are just not ready for such a puzzling experience and the responsibilities that go with it.

So yeah, I've been doing some thinking and I just can't reach a conclusion. Though it's been going swimmingly so far, who knows what's in the future, right? I mean they'll never not be in their 30s again. People say it's in their DNA, who knows. The point is, do you think I should continue to associate with people of their kind? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Are there precautions I have to take to keep me safe?

Thanks beforehand, B8.

that generation stuff is mostly a media/marketing gimmick made to get people to click on stupid articles, nobody takes it seriously. also, even within one of those generations someone could easily be friends with someone 10+ years older, while you could also be friends with someone from a different generation who is only a couple years apart.

but yeah idk how serious this topic is because I can't fathom this being a real concern or question. its fine to be friends with people. if its weird to you and bothers you, then its weird. if its not, then its not.

You guys personally know people in their 30s? I've heard they exist and I've even seen a few suspected 30s in real life, but mostly from a distance. I won't approach them because who knows what they're carrying. This topic is a real eye opener. You're telling me that people in their 30s look and act like the rest of us, and even have similar mannerisms? I'm almost inclined to write this off as SJW talk. Maybe it's okay to speak to them, but just don't marry them.

in western culture, specifically american (as i can't really speak outside of that), age stops really mattering when you graduate from high school and college. i'm 27 and in college so a lot of my friends are 5 years or so younger than me. Conversely, I have some friends in their 30s and 40s.

Most 30 somethings are millennials too.

Boomers - 45 through early 60s
X - early 60s through late 70s
Millennials - early 80s through mid 90s
Z - late 90s through mid 10s (2016 is a pretty good cut off point thinking about it)

But yes, the generational segregation thing is mostly stupid, and these days has a lot to do with making it easier for marketing

Trump's election victory was the capstone to the Casual Revolution. We have now entered the next phase, whatever that is (some people say it is the Feelz Before Realz Era).

Trump marked the end. Trump won because of social media stupidity (on both sides of the political spectrum tbh, but as somebody whose not a Trump fan its more on the Trump side imo). I mean there is some spillage here and there running into 2017, and some things that ended the era in 2015. Trump winning is just the major event that ended it.

Its kinda like how the Casual Revolution of 2007 began in late 2006 (South Park WoW episode, Youtube bought by Google, stuff like that) and ended early 08 (Pepe the Frog began around this time fwiw - he becomes important on the national stage later on....Iron Man 1 starting the MCU causing "cinematic universe mania" is probably a good cut off point). 2007 was just when the major shit really started (Facebook opening to public, iphone1 beginning current era smartphones, twitter becoming big due to the SXSW conference, Steam's first year of major growth, Netflix streaming begins, and perhaps most importantly the financial collapse, etc). Society as a whole barely changed from 2007 to like 2015....then things really changed to a more anger filled era.

Will the current era make us nostalgic for even the fucking awful Casual Revolution era idk, i lean towards most likely. Sad, but thats the state of affairs.

age doesn't matter; interests do

if you and your friends are playing games, watching shows together, etc. then who cares about age

if your friends are all talking about jobs/families/insurance/investments and you feel left out, then it's not great. but I don't really have any advice for that, except keep coming to board 8 where we don't talk about that stuff much
