I think it's either bad, or mediocre. Random, erratic, too many run-on sentences, repetitive, and annoying. Most of his other books are better, IMHO. Big Sur and The Dharma Bums are quite a lot better, and Lonesome Traveller is a little better. I think the film was pretty well done, though.
