Here's what I think a grown man should be embarrassed about. Are you listening, CE?

- Having a large collection of anime and / or manga

- Still watching and / or reading YA things

- Watching popcorn flicks

- Reading comics and / or watching movies based on them

- Talking about possible waifus

To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

Right, but you can ridicule a childish interest without obsessing over what is grown up and what isn't.

You people are pretending that your critics care way more than they do.

Probably one of the greatest quotes in history and one every young adult should take time to ponder over.

It is a good quote but I always favored this one, it's not really applicable to this topic but you made me think of it:

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

In fact I think there are more people who obsess over the idea that you shouldn't worry about being a child, not the other way around.

It reeks of insecurity when they feel the need to constantly clarify that age intention of interests shouldn't matter.

This. Most of that list in the OP are just forms of entertainment. If I work, pay my mortgage, do my chores, and pay attention to my wife, I am an adult fulfilling my adult duties. What I do for entertainment doesn't make me less adult.

Well, that goes along with with Nihilist is saying. The embarrassing and cringeworthy aspects of people having a "waifu" is the way they behave about it. If they simply treat it as a fetish and don't treat it seriously like a socially stunted (most people who talk about that) person does then that's fine... since many well adjusted adults have much weirder fetishes.
