There are different forms of slavery. Not merely the chattel slavery practiced in the US.

Indentured servitude isn't slavery in my book, but some of the conditions they had to endure were only a step or two above it.

From what I understand it was a way to slave someone without technically calling them your slave.

Yep, it's contractual but for all intents and purposes an indentured servant belongs to the person they are indentured to.

The modern definition of slavery has changed a little to go beyond just ownership/work without pay.

the current definition also includes people who work a job, ARE paid, but cannot leave due to threats or violence.
