He's a good author, but usually quite pulpy. His writing style is pretty bad, as well.

If you like him I would recommend Ryunosuke Akutagawa, who I personally think is a superior writer. However, it is fun to read Murakami's stuff.

i am not a fan of anime because i hate all the expository dialogue and cheesy writing. i figured that was just an anime thing, and then one day i read Kafka on the Shore and realized this is just how all Japanese writing is.

since then i havent really had the desire to read any more of his books, i guess they just dont resonate with me in terms of the style and in terms of the very "Japanese" themes in the books

It's the same in movies, too. I was actually reading a big topic about it recently, and it's because traditional Japanese theater, Kabuki, was very over the top and melodramatic, and that's where most Japanese art takes its inspiration.
