Someone you know reasonably well comes around your house. They ask to use your computer / laptop / tablet computer for half an hour, and you say yes. When they leave, you discover they've installed several new programs on your device, without your knowledge (at the time, obviously) and consent. Is this okay?

This kind of thing makes me angry, but some seem to find it fine. What do you think, CE?

I'd let them use my throwaway laptop and wouldn't give a fuck what they put on there. Nobody touches my main computer.

I'd never allow anyone to use my computer in the first place. Despite how well I know my friends, there's always the possibility that one of them is into some illegal shit.

If you are using another person's device you shouldn't install anything unless they need you to, but who just shows up at someone's house to use a computer? There are libraries that will generally have public computers for use.

Wow. I assumed people would mostly be okay with this. I know someone who comes around sometimes, and installs whatever she wants on my computer, and thinks it's fine. Then again, this person has a. very poor social skills, and b. doesn't understand normal social boundaries.

Yeah, unless it was something illegal I'd be fine. I'd just delete it and move on.

Most people here are practically married to their PCs, of course they'd get outraged.
